Euthanasia
y The intentional killing by act or omission of a dependent person

for his/her alleged benefit.

y Relieves extreme pain. y Also called active euthanasia. y Usually considered to be criminal homicide.

Types
y Voluntary - Euthanasia conducted with the consent of the patient

.
y legal in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. y Passive voluntary - euthanasia is legal throughout the U.S. y Non-Voluntary - consent of the patient . y Child euthanasia, which is illegal worldwide .

Continued..
y Voluntary, non-voluntary and involuntary euthanasia can all

be further divided :y Passive - entails the withholding of common treatments, such

as antibiotics, necessary for the continuance of life.

y Active euthanasia entails the use of lethal substances or forces

to kill and is the most controversial means.

Arguments Against Euthanasia

y Euthanasia devalues human life. y It can become a means of health care cost containment . y Why to kill someone deliberately. y Physicians and other medical care people should not be involved

in directly causing death.

Should it be legalized?
y 46% of physicians agree that physician-assisted suicide should be

allowed in some cases; 41% do not, and the remaining 14% think it depends.
y I believe that Euthanasia should be legalized because of that option

of dying.
y Many also think that they should stay alive because they don't want

death for their own reason. Why not put them out of there misery, if the pain that one goes through is excruciating why not let them die.
