INTRODUCTION Tobacco use is common amongst men and women worldwide. Tobacco dependence is invariably present in all substance users. It is estimated that 2 in every 10 boys and 1 in every 10 girls use a tobacco product. In india tobacco is used as a wide variety of ways including smoking, chewing, applying, sucking and gargling. Beedi smoking is the most popular form of smoking,while cigarette form is second most popular form of tobacco smoking. Tobacco is produced from a plant called cannabis sativa.

DEFINITION Tobacco dependence is termed as dependent pattern on behavior of tobacco in which the ability to moderate or stop use is repeatedly unsuccessful.. Nicotine is the active substance found in cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, beedis and kretks; it is both a stimulant and depressant. It is the main content present in tobacco. Tobacco use among men and women is widespread in all regions of India Discussion and among all sections of society. It have estimated that 58.8% of males in age range of 12-60 years currently use tobacco. In Kerala the prevalence of smoking, chewing tobacco is high. When studies conducted in adolescents and young adult of age group 15-30 years, 32.3% males and 1% females of rural area and 21.1% males and 0.6% females of urban area smoke; 0.8% males and 0.4% females of rural area and 1% males and 1% females of urban area chew tobacco.
