The elephants which live in Africa and Asia are the only surviving species of what was in prehistoric time a diverse and populous group of large mammals. While Asian elephants and African elephants have a lot in common, they differ slightly in appearance and each faces different threats to its survival. These three elephants belong to Asian territory. Elephants live in groups called 'herds'.Elephants smell, drink, eat and wash themselves with their long trunks.Elephants have tusks that are long teeth made of ivory.Their tusks help them get food and carry heavy objects. All elephants do not have tusks. Only the male Asian elephants have tusks whereas the male and female African elephants both have tusks.Elephants eat an extremely varied vegetarian diet. In Sri Lanka no other animal has been associated for so long with the people in their traditional and religious activities as the elephants do. The annual Perahera in Kandy, which dates back nearly 220 years, brings together well over a hundred elephants that parade the streets during the nights on certain pre-determined days in July-August each year.

The elephant symbolizes strength and is a typical animal of the island. The government-run orphanage was set up in Pinnawela situated in the mountainous central region of the Island to look-after orphaned baby elephants. Today 70 elephants herein, it has become the home to the largest captive group of elephants in the world. Orphaned young elephants whose parents have been the victims of poachers or accidents are tamed, reared & trained by mahouts herein to eventually become working beasts.
