From Monarchy to Parliament

A group of Protestants known as the Immortal Seven invited James II's daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange to depose the king. William obliged, arriving in England on 5 November 1688 to great public support. Faced with the defection of many of his Protestant officials, James fled the realm

ACT OF UNION 1707

Following the Treaty of Union in 1707,Acts of Union were passed in both the Parliament of England and the Parliament of Scotland, which created a new United Kingdom of Great Britain.

ACT OF UNION 1800

y

The Act of Union of 1800, effective from 1 January 1801, brings into existence a political entity called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

BUT, following the partition of Ireland, only North Ireland remained in the kingdom and finally United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland came into being!

Historically, and at the present day, unionist movements exist in Scotland and Northern Ireland. These movements seek to retain the ties between those areas and the UK. Such movements include the Ulster Unionist Party and the Scottish Unionist Party. The British National Party wishes to keep the Union between England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales through withdrawing from the EU, dismantling multiculturalism and supporting devolution (or even federalism) for each region, such as England, but the SUP and UKIP wish to abolish all three of the local parliaments and transfer all powers back to the Westminster Parliament.
