'a bond of protection'

The Guru ties a 'rakhadi' on his disciples. In the SwaminarayanSampradaya, Pramukh Swami Maharaj and the sadhus tie 'rakhadis' on devotees on this day. The underlying sentiment is that the Ekantik Dharma of the devotees be protected.

On this day, the sister ties the rakhadi on her brother's wrist symbolizing protection from evil influence and strengthening of sibling love between them. In return, the brother offers gifts or devotions and promises to protect her too.
