CONFLICT

Conflict occurs whenever: Disagreements exist in a social situation over issues of substance. Emotional antagonisms cause frictions between individuals or groups.

Interpersonal conflict
Clashes that occur when individuals who find themselves working or living in the same location are unable to come together in order to accomplish a goal or objective. Causes: lack of a common background, personality issues and differences in lived experience. Often occurs in the work place and may need resolution help by an individual who is external to the organization. Can also occur between roommates, team members or even domestic partners. Distinguished from intragroup conflict in that it takes place between two individuals, rather than many.

Intranational conflict
Occurs within a country. Example: civil war v A war between factions or regions of the same country. v A state of hostility or conflict between elements within an organization. v War between parties, factions, or inhabitants of different regions within the same nation. v Civil War The war in the United States between the Union and the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865. Also called War Between the States. v Civil War The war in England between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists from 1642 to 1648.

International conflict
Referred to conflicts between different nation-states and conflicts between people and organizations in different nation-states. War between two or more nations. Examples: v World Wars I and II involved many countries, caused the deaths of millions of people and brought unimaginable destruction and suffering. v The Cold War.
