knowledge y Previewing the text (author, organization, features, etc)

y Skimming: fast/ general meaning y Scanning: for specific detail y Paying attention to structure: look for indicators that

lead to the main idea y Annotating: making notes on the margins y Highlighting: drawing attention to important concepts, sentences, quotations, etc

y Summarizing: a short report of the main ideas (no details) y Paraphrasing: express the message in your own words

IN BOTH summarizing and paraphrasing, REMEMBER to indicate THE SOURCE! (e.g. According to / Scholars believe that / As the author suggests, / The report argues that y Analyzing: separate and/or distinguish the component parts of something; identifying advantages and disadvantages of something y Generalizing: form a more general opinion on the basis of examples, facts, etc found in the text y Evaluate: establish criteria and consider how important or successful something is according to those criteria y Synthesize: combine different ideas, facts, assumptions from different sources to form your own idea or arrive at your own conclusion.
