Celebrated every year as a festival by open source enthusiasts, Software Freedom Day 2010 was celebrated in Nepal by Nepal Open-Source Klub, NOSK. Showcasing the excellent free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) and the demonstration of how they can be used, Software Freedom Day 2010 was celebrated successfully in Nepal as in previous years.

Following the tradition of celebrating Software Freedom Day in Nepal by FOSS Nepal Community, this year Nepal Open Source Klub (NOSK) organized the event in the premise of Nepal College of Information Technology. With the support of various educational institutions, government bodies, and IT communities, this years software freedom day was a huge success with around 1000 visitors.

Preparation and Participation

Software Freedom Day, in previous years was celebrated by FOSS Nepal Community. (FOSS Nepal Won the Software Freedom Day Competition continuously for the last three years.) This time, with a view to celebrate Software Freedom Day in a distributed manner in different cities of Nepal, rather than in a single centralized location, FOSS Nepal celebrated Software

Freedom Day in various cities of Nepal and Nepal Open Source Klub, with reference from FOSS Nepal, celebrated Software Freedom Day in Kathmandu (Central Location where SFD was celebrated in past years.) all independently from FOSS Nepal.

NOSK gathered all the required resources for Software Freedom Day which includes human resources, financial resources and other physical resources, this time all independently from FOSS Nepal.

Volunteers from NOSK participated in various ways for the successful completion of the event along with volunteers from Kathford International College, Nepal Engineering College, Oscol College and St. Xaviers College.

. Event Management

The main responsibility of the event management team was to coordinate other teams in completing their jobs, assigning specific tasks to the volunteers and in general, to manage the complete event.

. Finance

The main responsibility of the finance team was to generate fund for the event through various means and to track the records of every financial activities that occurred during the event.

. Public Relation

Public Relation plays a great role for any event to be successful. The main role of Public Relation team was visiting different colleges and institutions spreading words about Software Freedom Day and meeting various media institutions and persons in order to advertise about Software Freedom Day in public media in order to gather maximum participation as possible

. Documentation

Documentation team was the most important team throughout the event. The main role of Documentation team was to make written records of each and everything related to Software Freedom Day 2010.

4. Promotions

Various Promotion Strategies were implemented

for the event. T-shirts are a good way of representing an event. Software Freedom Day Event T-shirts were printed and distributed to the volunteers and a certain number of T-shirts were available for the visitors to buy.

Advertisement and news in various websites and newspapers were published in order to spread words about Software Freedom Day celebration to the public.

Flyers and banners were printed and spread over different places containing information about the event.

The event was promoted using social networking sites like facebook and twitter.

Software Freedom Day Celebration

A whole day event was celebrated at Nepal College Of Information Technology premise as planned and prepared.

Inauguration

The program was formally inaugurated by chief guest Mr. Subir Pradhananga, president of FOSS Nepal Community with the introduction of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software). The other guests were Mr. Bhim Bhandari and Mr. Niranjan Khakurel from Nepal College of Information Technology including representative from Kathford International College. The guests emphasized in the importance of FOSS in the context of Nepal and encouraged the participants to use Free and Open Source Software.

Distro Demo

Distro Demo (demonstration of different linux distributions) was an attractive event of SFD 2010. we demonstrated different linux distributions that can be used as desktop systems and for servers as well. The main purpose of Distro Demo was to showcase different linux operating system that

people can chose to migrate to linux environment. The linux distributions demonstrated were:

2. Software Demo

Different open-source software that can be used as alternative for available proprietary software was demonstrated. The demonstration included most popular open-source software. Visitors showed keen interest in that software and said that they would try the software in their day to day activities. The

3. Linux Rescue Cell

Most of our visitors were new to Linux and many of them who used Linux had some problems with it. Linux Rescue Cell was a team of volunteers from NOSK who helped out visitors with problems in their Linux. Most of the visitors had problems with partitioning and dual booting Linux with Windows. The rescue Cell members helped them out in every way available. Some of the visitors had their laptops with them and wanted Linux installed in them and our team did that for them as well.

4. GB Satasat

GB Satasat was an interesting event. It is a word mix of English and Nepali. GB is acronym to Giga Byte and Satasat (nepali word) means to exchange. The concept of this event was to SHARE which really

justifies the real ideology of Open-source. Visitors visited the stall and copied open-source distros and softwares available with us and shared the ones with them. We also shared movies and other available softwares with the visitors. They copied whatever was available to their pendrives and hard-drives.

5. Open Painting Competition

We also had an event called Open Painting Competition. Visitor would come, take paper, pencil and colors available and draw whatever they wanted. Some fine arts were created in the competition. Mahesh Humagain from Kathmandu University was

the winner of the painting competition. Our winner had a prize too 6 months subscription of Nagarik News National Daily.

6. Open Quiz Competition

Open Quiz Competition was running throughout the day. It was a person based quiz competition in which a person visits the stall and answers available question set in the computer. The one answering most was declared the winner of the competition. Roshan Shrestha from NCIT was the winner of the competition and he was also awarded with 6 months subscription of Nagarik News National Daily.

7. Open Gaming

We had three computers loaded with Ubuntu Gamers Edition and available for the visitors to play game. Ubuntu Gamers Edition is a customized version of Ubuntu Linux that is modified for playing Open-source games available for Linux platform. A number of open source games were loaded in the

computers. The visitors seemed to love the gaming experience in Linux.

8. Movie Show (HD and 3D)

One of the attracting events to the visitors was Movie show. We showed many HD and 3D movies to the visitors in Big Screen Using Projectors. Most of the HD movie shown were animation movies created my using open-source 3D manipulation software Blender. The movie most loved by the visitors was Big Buck Bunny.

9. CD/DVD Distribution

Various CD s and DVD s were distributed to the visitors. The contents distributed are:

. Open CD PAILA

We distributed the 3.0 version of Open CD, code named PAILA in the occasion of SFD 2010. Open CD is a interactive CD containing opensource alternative applications to many available proprietary application for windows platform.

Some of the applications included are GIMP, Open Office, VLC, firefox, etc. The previous versions of Open CD were made using Adobe Flash but this time following Open-source principles, Open Flash was used for the development of the CD. A team from NOSK used different open source tools like Notepad ++, GIMP, SWFMILL (library manager) MTASC (action script compiler) and XML and ActionScript 2.0 programming Language for compiling the Open CD.

. Happy Boot DVD

Happy Boot DVD is a multi-boot dvd compiled by member of NOSK, Dipesh Acharya. This DVD contained different linux distribution all in one DVD and could be booted as users choice from the DVD boot menu. The Distributions included are Ubuntu, Fedora, Open Suse, Damn Small Linux, and GeeXBOX. The DVD also includes some utilities like parted magic, Ultimate boot CD, and Memory Test which can be directly run from the DVD during boot. The operating systems and system utilities included in the Happy Boot DVD are live versions meaning they can be booted from the DVD itself.

. Developers Ubuntu

A team of NOSK customized Ubuntu Linux to contain Developers Tools automatically on DVD so that Developers could directly get every

of the tools they want in a single DVD without having to search for them in the internet. The operating system was codenamed Devlobuntu. This DVD contained different linux utilities as well. Some of the applications available in the DVD are Netbeans, Eclipse, Aptana Studios, Aptana RadRails 2, Geany, Scite, Bluefish, gPhpEdit, PHP, Perl, Python, Apache, Ruby, Rails JDK, JRE, Firefox, Chromium Tythbox, Sine, Guake, VLC, Wine Brasero, Foxit Reader, ARK, aMSN, Gimp, Blender, GIT etc.

Presentation

Presentation on Nepali Open Hardware Nepaluino was given as well in SFD 2010 by Foss Nepal representative. Nepaluino is Open Hardware clone of Adruino Open Hardware that is available for cheap in Nepal.

11. Signature Campaign

Signature Campaign was a symbolic commitment of the visitors towards the FOSS Movement. Hundreds of people including our chief guests signed the banner.

12. Fossials (Foss Socials)

At the end of the day, we had some entertaining programmes and called it Fossials. After a long successful event, we got tired and to refresh for a moment we had these small events. The events were Musical Chair and Dance Party. We enjoyed the Fossials a lot.

The Event of Software Freedom Day 2010 celebrated by NOSK was covered in newspaper before the event and following the event as well.
