Adobe InDesign CS5.

5 How-to guide

Setting object export options

Object export options in InDesign CS5.5 can save you a lot of time when it comes to creating EPUB, HTML, or accessible PDF files. With this feature, you can convert any InDesign path, frame, or group into an image that can be exported exactly as it appears on screen; assign alternate (Alt) text to images; tag an object as an artifact that can be ignored by screen readers for the visually impaired; and apply custom compression, resolution, alignment or spacing to an image. This guide explores the first option: converting an object to an image.

Step 1: The heading and graphs in the original document (above left) are made with a number of frames and paths. When exported to EPUB or HTML, many objects (such as the graphs) cannot be reproduced, and those that can often appear incorrectly (above right).

Step 2: To help ensure an object or group appears in the exported file exactly as it does in InDesign, choose Object > Object Export Options, click the EPUB and HTML tab, and select the Custom Rasterization checkbox. This dialog box can remain open while you work, which is helpful if you need to apply settings to several different objects.

Step 3: When you export the file to EPUB or HTML, InDesign converts the logo and graphs into images. However, the frames and text remain editable in InDesign.
