Digital Video Disc

y The DVD was introduced in 1995 by Sony and Philips. This second-generation optical disc uses a 650 nm wavelength laser diode, allowing for increased capacity and speed.

y

Available in June 2006, Sony's Blu-ray disc format was the direct competitor to HD DVD. Blu-ray also uses a 405 nm laser but has a smaller spot size--or the area where the laser can be focused--allowing for a larger capacity than HD DVD.

HD DVD Specifications
y HD DVD had a layer capacity of 15 GB of data. Video had a data rate of 29.4 Megabits per second and a ma imum resolution of 1920 by 1,080 pi els. For high-fidelity audio, HD DVD was licensed to use Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and LPCM.
