    Class Mode of Action Isotonic (crystalloids)

    indication Provides free water necessary for renal excretion of solutes.Used to replace water losses and treat hypernatremia. Provide 170 calories/L To provide a vehicle for the mixing and administration of medications. As a secondary source of dextrose for hypoglycaemia..

    Contraindication Untreated hyperglycemia.In patients needing volume fluid replacement for hypovolemia (not a substitute for Lactated Ringers or normal saline).

    Adverse reaction Hyperkalemia, hypernatremia / hyperchloremia& conditions arising from them eg. edema, certain cardiac diseases. Rarely , hypermagnesemia / hyperphosphatemia

    Nursing Responsibilities Know the clients normal range of vital signs before instituting intravenous therapy. Altered fluid or electrolyte imbalances can affect the vital signs. o Know the clients developmental stage. The proportion of the total body water to body mass changes from infancy to older adult years. o Know the clients weight.
