Context Clues: Definition Revealing the meaning of a word by defining it within the sentence.

. Examples of context clues: appositive, example, comparison Appositive: a restatement of the same idea in other words (often set off by commas). Sample appositive: Uncle Ivan is very fond of kohlrabi, a vegetable related to the cabbage. Example: Look for key words that serve as an example of the term. Sample Example: The reading teacher must be prepared to deal with dyslexia and other reading problems. Comparison: When the writer compares the unfamiliar word with other, more familiar words. Sample Comparison: The dromedary, like all other desert animals, can go for long periods of time without drinking water. Homework: Write a story using your vocabulary terms. Be sure to reveal the meaning of each term by using an appositive, an example, or a comparison of the term. Then identify above the term which context clue you used.
