7th and 8th Grade *2011-2012*Dr. Carr

Email: Alexander.Carr@ocps.net Office Hours: Morning 8:45-9:10, by appointment Tutoring: starting in October on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:30

Course Description: The study of geometry includes properties of geometric gures, trigonometric relationships, and reasoning to justify conclusions. Methods of justication will include paragraph proofs, two-column proofs, indirect proofs, coordinate proofs, and verbal arguments. A spiraled development of formal proof involving inductive and intuitive approaches as well as deductive axiomatic methods will be used.

Materials: 1 Three Ring Binder with Dividers (Sections: Notes, HW, Test/Quizzes, FCAT Prep) Pencil (mechanical is preferred), erasers, pencil sharpener with cover for shavings TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 iPod, iTouch, iPhone, iPad or App enabled smartphone
!

Benchmarks and Sunshine State Standards: Use truth tables to determine truth values of propositional statements. Use methods for direct and indirect proof and determine whether a a short proof is logically valid. Identify and use the relationship between special pair of angles formed by parallel lines and transversal. Use properties of congruent and similar polygons to solve mathematical or real-world problems. Explain the derivation and apply formulas for perimeter and area of polygons (triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, etc.). Compare and contrast special quadrilaterals based on their properties. Dene, identify, and construct altitudes, medians, angle bisectors, perpendicular bisector, orthocenter, centroid, incenter, and circumference. Apply inequality theorems: triangle inequality, inequality in one triangle, and the Hinge Theorem. Prove theorems related to circles, including related angles, chords, tangents, and secants.

CLASS INFORMATION AND EXPECTATIONS

Arrive to class on time Be prepared with supplies and homework Show respect in words and action Ask questions!!
!

Utilize resources and time eciently and eectively Listen carefully and follow directions

Attendance: Every day is important! Your success in this course is directly related to how often you are present. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the work and notes that you missed. If you are on campus during any portion of the school day, your homework for that day will be due and any scheduled quiz or test must be taken. It is your responsibility to come see me if you arrive late to school or leave early and miss class.

If you miss the class the day before a test and return the day of the test, you will be expected to take the test as scheduled. If you missed two or more days before a test and return the day of the test, come see me and we can make arrangements for you to take the test at a later date.

Grading: Homework 10 points each Quizzes 50 points each Tests 100 points each Project 250 points Class Participation 5o You will have 2 quizzes and 1 test per chapter. There will be 1 project due every grading period.

Homework: Homework is assigned on Mondays for the entire week. Homework will be checked at the beginning of class. Its very important for students to copy the problem down, show all their work (when appropriate), and circle/box in their answers. Homework submitted with only answers shown will receive NO credit! Test and Quizzes: Students will be notied in advance of quizzes and tests. All graded test and quizzes will be return to the student for parental notication. All test and quizzes will be kept in the test/quizzes portion of the Honors Algebra I notebook.

Late Work: Late work will be accepted ONLY the following day for half credit. Work turned in after that will receive NO credit!

Important Information:

Students taking Honors Algebra I/Honors Geometry will take a mid-term exam and a nal exam. The midterm exam will count for 20% of their fall semester grade and will be administered in January. A nal, statewide, exam will be administered in May. It will be computer based and will count for 30% of the students nal grade.

Message to Parents: This year Im encouraging students to use their smartphones, iPads, iPhones, iTouch, etc. in class. Students will be asked to download free apps so please dont be surprised by this request. Algebra/ Geometry can be dicult subjects to tackle and I hope the use of these apps will help the students become stronger mathematicians. Also, remember to download FindMe app on all your apple products in case any item is either lost or stolen!
