Yankee among women, Babe Ruth still tops among men in Quinnipiac poll released Friday. By Kareem Johnson DNAinfo Reporter/Producer MANHATTAN Whos your favorite Yankee? The Captain or the Bambino, the Yankee Clipper or the Commerce Comet? New Yorkers had their say on their favorite players in a Quinnipiac University Poll released on Friday, and legendary Yankee slugger and outfielder Babe Ruth and shortstop Derek Jeter came out heads and shoulders above the rest, with 23 percent each. Rounding out the fan favorites, Joe DiMaggio grabbed 9 percent, Lou Gehrig 8 percent and Mickey Mantle 6 percent. Women showed their admiration for Jeter in large numbers, with Jeter garnering 30 percent to Ruths 16 percent, a nearly 2 to 1 margin. The Babe was tops among men, backing the Bambino 29 18 percent. It was a much closer contest between the Captain and the Bambino among 18 to 34 year-olds preferring Jeter 27 23 percent. The Babe is a favorite among those 35 to 64, and DiMaggio leads among those over 65. Citywide, New Yorkers preferred the Bronx Bombers to the Amazin's by a wide margin, 59 percent to 26 percent. Three percent said their favorite team was the Boston Red Sox. Even Queens, home to the Mets' Citi Field, baseball fans polled preferred the Yankees over the Mets 45 to 37 percent. Among Yankee fans, The Bambino edged the Captain by 8 percent, 29 - 19 percent. In the poll New Yorkers weighed in on whether they would give back Jeters 3,000 -hit baseball, with 50 percent saying they would have given the ball back to Jeter, and 42 percent said they would have kept it. Women again led the way, with 55 percent saying they would return it, and 48 percent of men said they would. Quinnipiac University polled 1,528 New Yorkers from July 19 25. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percent.
