Introduction to Jigs and Fixtures

Fixture: is a device that fixed to the worktable of a machine and locates the work piece in an exact position relative to the cutting tool. A fixture
Locate work piece Clamp work piece Support Work piece

Jig: is a device that holds the work and locates the path of the tool.
Jig is a type of a Fixture that guide and support cutting tool

Introduction to Jigs and Fixtures

Jigs and Fixtures originated from Swiss watch company Objectives of Jigs and Fixtures
To provide interchangeability To reduce cost To assure the high accuracy To decrease setting time To hold complex shapes To reduce quality control expenses

Role of Jigs and Fixtures in mass production

Jigs and Fixtures play very important role in mass production the main advantages of Jigs and Fixtures are as follows
Ensure interchangeability Ensure accuracy in manufactured parts Reduce possibilities of human error Reduce manufacturing time

Allow to use semi-skilled labor

Quality of a product and Jigs and Fixture

Quality of product is directly linked with production tooling, as poor quality tooling gives uneven results that can be very difficult to control in production line. The accuracy of a production tool should be 10 times less then part accuracy. For example to maintain tolerance of 0.1 mm the tool has to be built in 0.01 mm accuracy
