In everyday language, we say that something is valid if its sounds meaningful, or well grounded on principles or evidence.

In legal terminology. Lawyers say that something is valid if it is executed with the proper formalities.

In psychology appropriateness, meaninfulness,correctness and usefulness of any inferences a researcher draws based on data obtained through the use of an instrument.

Validity, as applied to a test, is a judgment based on evidence about the appropriateness of inferences drawn from test scores.
