REQUIREMENT ELICITATION

These are activities involved in discovering, gathering and collecting requirements for a system. It is done to find problems to be solved.

ELICITATION STAGES

-OBJECTIVE SETTING -BACKGROUND -KNOWLEDGE ORGANISATION -STAKEHOLDER REQUIREMENT COLLECTION

After requirements are collected they have to be checked.

. Necessity checking- checking if a requirement is really needed. . Consistency and completeness checking- requirements are crosschecked for consistency and completeness. .

ELICITATION TECHNIQUES

INTERVIEWS: talking to stakeholders to understand the problem. The two types are: Closed- looking for answers in answered questions. Open- what stakeholders want from the system. -SCENARIOS: stories, which explain how, a system will work or will be used.

-OBSERVATION AND SOCIAL ANALYSIS/ ETHNOGRAPHY: technique from social sciences used to understand actual work process. -REQUIREMENT REUSE: re using requirements of systems for a new system. Used in similar systems or matching systems.

-PROTOTYPING: 2 types of prototyping 1. Throwaway prototyping- focusing on requirements causing problems.

2. Evolutionary prototyping- focusing on requirements easily understood and that will deliver a good end user.

ELICITATION PROBLEMS -NOT ENOUGH TIME FOR ELICITATION -INADEQUATE PREPARATION BY ENGINEER -STAKEHOLDERS ARE UNCONVINCED OF THE NEED FOR NEW SYSTEM
