Blood Flow Pathway

Oxygen-poor blood enters through the right atrium and travels into the right ventricle.

The blood leaves the heart through the pulmonary artery and enters the lungs.

In the lungs, oxygen-poor blood releases carbon dioxide through the alveoli in exchange for oxygen.

Oxygen-rich blood now travels back to the heart through the pulmonary vein.

Oxygen-rich blood enters through the left atrium and is pumped into the left ventricle.

Oxygen-rich blood leaves the heart through the aorta and is pumped through the arteries.

Oxygen-rich blood travels from the arteries to capillaries to individual body cells. This is where the oxygen is used by the cells to consume nutrients and make energy. In exchange, carbon dioxide is produced.

Oxygen-poor blood travels back to the heart through the veins.
