From the Editors - Tomi Kiviluoma and Colin Diersing

Welcome to the years rst issue of BTW! This is not our rst issue. Our rst issue will be released just before the beginning of orienta>on week and will contain all of the fantas>c ar>cles you will send us. However, BTW is a newspaper, and the appointment of a new principal for LPC represents one of the biggest news stories of the year. So we have published what you are holding: a prologue edi>on containing our interview with ArneJ Edwards and the rst From the Editors column of the year. In the future, we hope to use this column to provoke furious debate on campus. In our vision this will become a space where conten>ous ideas about what LPC should be are considered and promoted, where we can contribute to and provoke a broader dialogue about our life on campus. However, with the beginning of the new year weighing so heavily on everyones mind, we thought we would begin withe an opening statement on the year. So rst of all, welcome back to most. To the teachers in new roles, congratula>ons. And to the new teachers, principal, and other sta members, welcome! As is par>cularly evident this rst week, LPC redenes itself every year. An en>re half of the student body changes an event with the poten>al to completely redene the atmosphere on campus. (con>nued on page 2)

BTW

The introduc>on of a new principal can redene a school. It thus seems natural that it comes with quite a bit of concern on the part of students. Unfortunately, in the case of the new principal of LPC, the appointment did not come with a lot of informa>on to calm this concern. Always looking for a way to act in the public interest, the sta of BTW swung into ac>on - arranging for an interview with the newly appointed Mr. Edwards. They were pleasantly surprised to nd that he happily consented to the interview. From what the interviewer could gather, Mr. Edwards seemed engaged, forward thinking, and excited about his new role. He seems to think of UWC in the same way many students do - as an exci>ng opportunity both to give back and learn. The editors of BTW wish him the best in what seems to be a promising year. Below is the interview, conducted via Skype with ques>ons submiJed electronically by LPC students. BTW: What mo>vated you to apply for the posi>on? AA: I see there were three main reasons that really made me to apply. First of all, the knowledge this school holds is unimaginably immense. Having said that, there is an opportunity to work and live with the most outstanding students in the world and not just purely on academic means. I am also interested in educa>ng the student as a whole. Furthermore, the diversity this school has on an interna>onal level is unique. As second driving force Id men>on the UWC family and by this I dont mean just the colleges themselves but the vast network of alumni, families of students and teachers reaching all around the world. I cant really think of any other network such as this. Lastly I refer to my interest to remain working in Hong Kong as I have worked here for twelve years, formerly as the vice principal of a local school KGV. I count Hong Kong as one of my three homes now. My other two homes are England, which is my country of birth and Xining, a town in the province of Qinghai in northwest China. With a class from my previous school we used to pay regular visits to a childrens home over there. BTW: How would you gain and maintain admira>on or respect among the students? AA: First of all, I do not like the sound of the word admira>on. I am a humble person and I would preferably use the word respect. There are some prospects on how I would like myself to be viewed in the college. I desire to be around as much as possible, enjoying face-to-face conversa>ons with students in the canteen or anywhere at all. I would be very approachable. Dening respect is to learn where the other individual comes from and through that grow to respect the journey they have been on. And alone this conversa>on can be a huge journey for the corresponding person. (con>nued on page 2)
