Purpose of an OS: To organize and control the hardware and software All desktop computers have OS; three most common: Microsoft, Macintosh, and LINEX OS Functions: 1. Manages hardware and software resources of the system 2. Provides a stable way for apps to deal w/hardware Types Real Time Operating Systems: Real Time OS are used to control machinery and scientific devices Single User Single Task: OS manages so that 1 user can do 1 think at a time Single User Multi-Tasking: OS is what most people use on laptops and desktops Multi User: OS allows many users to use computer all at once
