Effect of Spar (CaF2) on Hydrogen content during Steel Making: CaF2 lowers the melting point of slags enabling

usage of higher basicity slags CaF2 deceases the viscosity of slag Slags containing fluorspar, fluorine is lost and SiF4 is formed 2CaF2 + SiO2 = 2CaO + SiF4 CaF2 reacts with silica present in CaO SiO2 type slag only in presence of water. A possible scheme for this catalytic reaction is shown: 2H2O + 2CaF2 = 2CaO + 4HF 4HF + SiO2 = SiF4 + 2H2O Which gives overall reaction: 2CaF2 + SiO2 = 2CaO + SiF4 Hence with the help of fluorspar, we can reduce the hydrogen content in steels. But the evolution of hydrogen fluoride leads to heavy corrosion of silica roofs of the furnaces.
