FS Oncore is a compact reflowable Land Grid Array (LGA) type module, built with high temperature solder. Ideal for high volume production, modules are supplied in tape and reel format ready for placement. By eliminating unnecessary RF and data connectors, substantial cost savings are achieved. In autonomous mode, after operating code is bootloaded into the FS Oncore, it functions as a standard GPS receiver, outputting position, time and date at a maximum 1Hz update rate. In assisted mode a cellular network can provide A-GPS information allowing fast acquisition at low signal levels. Using our patented time resolution feature, FS Oncore can resolve time quickly using only the GPS signal, eliminating the need for accurate time transfer from the cellular network, which is ideal for asynchronous GSM / WCDMA . MS-Assisted and MS-Based operation is supported, with messages based around the 3GPP specification, simplifying host driver software tasks. Integration could not be easier: The host application needs a bi-directional SPI port or UART, minimal Host MIPS and 200K bytes memory spare for storage of the GPS Operating Firmware. FS Oncore is self-supporting (after initial firmware download) and does not need Host interaction to operate autonomously. If no GPS fix is required the Host may ignore the I/O port until a GPS fix is required. Bootloading is performed after a simple AT command handshake to discover the FS Oncore. The handshake process indicates to the FS Oncore if its in a SPI or UART configuration. It also allows simple product tiering, where the GPS can be a placement option. To optimize power usage, the on-board TCXO is only active during position measurement. Availability Evaluation kits for the FS Oncore and limited quantities of samples will be available September 03 from Synergy Systems, contact details below. Initial evaluation kits will support MS-Based A-GPS, and include a GPS reference receiver for the collection of Assistance Data. Autonomous software will be available January 04 for the FS Oncore, with 3GPP type position output protocol. Fully featured Autonomous software including NMEA is scheduled for Q204. Note the FS Oncore evaluation kits are capable of supporting all software versions, Autonomous, MSBased and MS-Assisted when released. Updates to the firmware will be downloadable via our web site in the secure area. A password will be shipped with the Synergy evaluations kits to allow download.
