Lullabies in Old Arabic Heritage


A Sociolinguistic Approach

Abstract
This study aims at rereading Arabic linguistics throughout its
various phases of development in an attempt to interpret it in light of the
modern contribution provided by sociolinguistics with its vast horizons.
This will be done through a sociolinguistic reading of the poetry for
lulling kids in old Arabic heritage.
The study points to a variety of social aspects reflected by the
linguistic constructions of the poems. These aspects include preferring
males to females, and highlighting the characteristics of the ideal future
husband/male child such as courage and generosity. In addition, these
poems reflect several religious and social beliefs relating to envy, evil
eye, vows and spells.
The research has also revealed clear linguistic differences
between discourse addressing male children and that intended for female
ones. These differences highlight the significance of recognizing the
gender element in discourse analysis. The research has also revealed
linguistic differences attributed to senders' gender and their social status.
Social differences caused fundamental differences in discourse quality,
level, lexicon, structure, style, and significations. The research has also
found that women of socially distinguished families appear as important
social and linguistic figures.
The study has also shown that the recipient child is almost absent
in this type of linguistic messages as the real recipient in most cases is
society, the other spouse (husband or wife), and co-wives among others.
The child, in the end, is often a mere object through which messages are
sent to others.
