Lesson 15—Offering Isaac by Faith
Synopsis: Abraham's offering Isaac by faith was the capstone of his experience of living by
faith. Furthermore, in being offered, Isaac typified Christ who gave Himself to die on the cross
for our redemption. In Genesis 22 we see a vivid portrait in type of the fellowship Christ had
with the Father on His way to Golgotha to be crucified.
(CENTRAL THOUGHT: Genesis 22 shows us a marvelous picture of how the Lord died for us.
BURDEN To IMPART: The Lord was willing to die for us because He loved us. Such love should
inspire us to give ourselves to Him absolutely.

This story in Genesis 22 gives us a fabulous picture in type of Christ offering Himself for
us, Surely this should convince us the Bible isthe word of God!
1, He was offered in the same place where the Lord was crucified—Gen. 22:2;

2. He bore the wood by which he was to be offered—Gen. 22:7; John 19:17
3. He was obedient unto death—Gen. 22:9-10; Matt. 26:39; Phil. 2:8
4. He did not open his mouth—Gen. 225; Isa. 53:7100

C. He was in fellowship with the father
1. This is a vivid picture of how Christ fellowshipped with the Father about
going to die—Gen. 22:7-8
‘The New Testament does not tell us what transpired between the Lord Jesus and the
Father as He was bearing His cross, being led away to be crucified. However, the
type in Genesis 22 gives a picture worth ten thousand words. What a sweet scene we
see here! As Isaac was ascending the mountain with his father, he fellowshipped with
him about being offered. The Lord Jesus must have had a similar fellowship with the
Father on His way to Golgotha
2. He was absolutely obedient to the Father's will—Gen, 22:9; Phil. 2:8
Its significant to note that Isaac was a grown man at this time, yet he was willing
to be ted to the altar tobe sacrificed. The Lord Jesus was also obedient unto death.
D. He was also in resurrection
1. He was offered on the third day—Gen. 22:4
The number three here signifies resurrection.
2. He was given back to his father in resurrection in type—Gen. 22:13-14;
Acts 2:24; Heb. 11:19
Christ became our substitute—1 Pet. 3:18
‘A. He was the Lamb of God typified by the ram—Gen. 22:13; John 1:29
But this picture in the Old Testament shows us clearly how Christ, the Son of God, became
@ Lamb to die for us, to be our substitute on the cross.
B. He was caught in the thicket of humanity—Gen. 22:13
The ram's horns (typifying Christ's power and strength) were caught in the thicket,
tupifying that Christ was willing to be caught in the thicket of humanity due to His love
for us
. He died for our sins on the cross—1 Tim. 26; Rev. 1:5; Tit. 214; Eph. 5:2;
Gal. 1:4; 2:20¢
IV. The Lord’s redeeming love constrains us to respond to Him—2 Cor. 5:14
A. Christ's love for us was demonstrated in His dying for us—1 John
John 3:16; Rom. 5:8
B. We respond to this love by voluntarily giving ourselves to Him—2 Cor. 5:14-15
16; 4:9-10;
JUNTOR HIGH APPLICATION: Draw a chart on the board that is composed of two columns. One
column lists the items of Genesis 22 and the other column shows the amazing
with the Lord's life in the gospels. As you go through the items of the chart, have the young
brothers and sisters ponder the feeling of the father’s heart as he walked up to Moriah, the
sense within Isaac while speaking with Abraham, the content of their conversation with one
another, the wonder of Isaac’s complete obedience to lie on the alter, and the glory of receiving
Isaac back (typifying resurrection). Apply these same considerations to the Lord's life and help
them see the intimacy of the Lord with His Father and the sweetness of His sacrificial love for

GOSPEL APPLICATION: Present Christ as our substitute, explaining why it was necessary for
Him to die for us. Then follow points IL through IV. of the outline. His death was an act of love,
and we should respond with an act of love—giving ourselves to Him.
