 Display States – Solid Edge give the user the ability to control how the
parts are displayed. Plus with Assembly configurations give the SE
user the ability to load/unload parts/subs in and out of memory, this
gives the user flexibility and performance when working with Large
Assemblies.
 SolidWorks does not have the ability to load/unload parts with the
use of configuration/display status
 Linked Viewports – This was nice back in the day when rotation was
hard and we did not have tools to help see all around the part. Solid
Edge has always give the same results.
 Solid Edge is the leader when it comes to Large Assembly
management. With the myriad of selection and display tools, Solid
Edge gives the user the productivity tools he needs to get the job done.

 Smart Components
 Add a Smart Component and Get: Saves
within the part file. Only way to know if
the part has the Smart Components the
user must place the part file first.
 Mating Parts
 Mounting Features (only ones supported)
 Extruded or revolved bosses
 Extruded or revolved cuts
 Simple holes
 Hole Wizard holes
 Auto-sizing Diameters – Hard to handle
the part number when the system keeps
changing the size of part that is totally
different.

Systems Design – Solid Edge V18
 This is functionality that has been in Solid Edge for
Three Years
 Solid Edge is the innovator of combining
parts/subassemblies along with all mating and
mounting features into one complete solution
for ease of creation and reuse.
 Solid Edge is the innovator with Capture Fit
which enables the user to capture how a
part/subassembly is correctly placed into the
assembly, while they are placing it into the
assembly, rather than guessing what mate
relationships are need for that part.
 Solid Edge can save the System Library in a
shared location on a network for all users.
This help the user understand where ALL
System Libraries are.

Systems Design
 Simplify Assembly
 Assembly Simplification – Only looks at the small
features in a part file and does not look at any
Assembly features. Also when they simplify an
assembly the user has to ignore feature that affect
an assembly mate. If they don’t then the
relationships will fail!! This is NOT the case with
Solid Edge.
 Only works on these part features
 Chamfers
 Extrudes, Boss, Boss-thin, cut-thin. (Base extrudes
and extrudes that are not Blind or Mid-Plane are not
found)
 Fillets; Simple, multi-radius, face (without the holdline
parameter), variable radius. (Full round fillets are not
found)
 Holes; Simple and Hole Wizard.

 FeatureWorks
 Miter Flange Support
 Additional Hole Wizard
Recognition – SolidWorks can not recognize holes
with a pattern 12

Systems Design – Simplify Assembly

 Solid Edge’s Simplify Assembly is not

an automated simplify part function.
This is a truely Simplifying
Assemblies.
 Solid Edge’s Simplify Assembly make
the assembly simple without
compromising the integrity of the
established relationships. SE
maintains relationships when
switching between Simplify and
Designed.
 Solid Edge’s Simplify Assembly allows
the user to pick which part are to be
included AND if they want to use
Simplified or Designed parts.

 In-context analysis of part & sheet metal models
 Stress and Modal
 Natural frequencies are key

 Assemblies with Clearances –
Same as Insert into a Part and

 Adaptive Meshing
 Multi-bodies Support
 Choose Body to Perform
Stress Analysis - In order for
this to work, you must first run
a simulation on the part in the
assembly before you can run
CosmosXpress with multi-
bodies. Also the interface
does not let you define a part
material if one is not already
defined for the part.

FEA – FEMAP Express

 Solid Edge allows Dynamic Sectioning of

the part while still looking at the results.
This gives a better view inside the part
and a transparency.
 Solid Edge performs a correct mesh on
thin parts (ie. Sheetmetal part) via the
mid-surface of a sheet metal part.
 SolidWorks can get the mid-surface
of a Sheetmetal part, but
CosmosXpress can not perform the
analysis on that mid-surface.
 Solid Edge while still in an assembly,
can assign a material to a part while in
the FEMAP Express Wizard.
CosmosXpress, while in an assembly,
the user MUST already have the
material assigned to the part.

FEA – FEMAP Express

 Solid Edge can perform a Modal

Analysis. CosmosXpress can not
perform this analysis.
 Solid Edge can perform an analysis
on either a designed or simplified
part.
 Solid Edge while in the context of an
assembly, can apply loads and
constraints to a wide variety of
geometry from any part in the
assembly

About SolidWorks
 Rapid Blue technology has given Solid Edge
users the ability to speed up every day design
tasks for shape creation. Users can bring in
any image from an ID and control how that
image looks and has since SEV12.
 Solid Edge users have tools like Shape
preserving curves which allow correct behavior
during indirect edits. Significantly fewer edits to
achieve a similar, but subtly different shape,
and Dynamic Edit dramatically shortens the
iteration cycle with immediate feedback.
 Solid Edge is the leader when it comes to
creating simple but complex curves.
SolidWorks can not create a single surface
from just one profile and one guide curve.

 Text in a Box – Solid Edge has had this since V1
 General Tables –
 3D Drawing Views – This tool is to aid in knowing
how far a user can cut into a component when
using the Broken out section view. It lets the user
rotate a drawing view out of its plane so that they
can select how far to cut. This is very cumbersome
and the Solid Edge step method is more intuitive.
Also the result of the broken view remains in the
