The George Washington University Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps

OUR HISTORY In 1981, then Rear Admiral Ed Briggs, USN, Commander, Navy Recruiting Command, wanted to investigate the possibility of a local university willing to establish a consortium NROTC unit, which would be the first of its kind in the Washington area. After many discussions with officials from each of the universities in the area over the next year, The George Washington University was finally convinced that it should be the lead university in this effort. Working with the University, the Washington Recruiting District Advisory Council accelerated the administrative process through the Department of the Navy, and gained final approval for the consortium in 1983 with the first class to begin in 1984. Since the program's inception, The George Washington University has accepted midshipmen from Georgetown University, the University of Maryland at College Park, Catholic University of America, and Howard University. The battalion is now composed of approximately 140 Navy and Marine-option Midshipmen, Navy Officer Candidates, and Active Duty Marines earning their commission through the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Program. ABOUT US While we have five universities in our consortium, the majority of our Midshipmen attend The George Washington University and the majority of our Officer Candidates and Marines attend The University of Maryland - College Park .. We are from all over the United States and have several members living abroad. We also perform volunteer events throughout the DC Metro area. In addition, we visit Norfolk, Andrews AFB, Annapolis, and many other places as we attempt to take advantage of the vast opportunities the area presents. WHAT WE STUDY As we are located in the Nations capital, almost a third of the students in our program study a field relating to politics or international relations. We also have approximately a quarter studying Tier 1 and Tier 2 majors (engineering, mathematics, and the hard sciences). However, we have a wide variety of majors including everything from Aerospace Engineering to Dance. OUR INTENDED COMMUNITIES
