4 AIR VALVE OPERATION
4.4 Introduction
ast experience has shown that the operation of air valves can cause surge
pressures and these can lead to damage to the air valves and the surrounding
pipes and supports. Because of this experience and the damage experienced
‘on site, a range of sir valve operating scenarios has been studied.
1.2. Air Valve Damage
Some damage has occurred to the air valves and this is listed below:
a Incident Date
AVIS | 68 Nays]
‘AVIO. 25.06.05
AVOT ‘SV body sheared e105
AVG Not recorded (probably ball damage) Notreconied
AV32 Ball darmaged Notreconled
AVE Ball damaged 72.06.06,
AVM Gasket broken 16.06.06
AVIS: TadGenm x 600mm fang Teak 10.05.06,
‘There are several interesting ndings associated with the location and nature
of this damage that has directed our work to date and these are:
1. AVIS, AVIO and AVI! are all the “Offset Chamber" air valves:
2. AVI8and AV10 are at a considerably higher elevation than AVI and
‘most of the simulations undertaken to date of normal operation show
lower pressures at these locations (due to the high elevation). This may
tentatively indicate that the normal operating scenarios are not tie cause
of failure
"The configuration of AVI may aced tbe vetified ss we may have conflicting
