CMP xxx: Introduction to Computer Network

Credits: 04 (Lect, Tutorial, Lab: 4, 1, 0) Objective(s): The objective of the course is to introduce the students with basic concepts of computer network, its architecture, structure & the functionalities of different layers in a network. Learning Outcome(s): After successful completion of this course students should be able:

CO1: to understand the fundamental concepts related to computer networking. CO2: to understand the architecture and structure of computer networks.
CO3: to understand different models of computer networks (i.e. OSI & TCP/IP) CO4: to understand the design issues involved in establishing a computer network Description UNIT1: Introduction: Defining Computer Networks, Network Topologies, OSI reference model, TCP/IP reference model. Physical layer: Various Transmission media, Switching, multiplexing- FDM, TDM. UNIT2: Medium Access sub layer: Channel Allocation Problem, LAN protocols ALOHA pure and slotted versions, CSMA, CSMA/CD, and Collision free protocols. Overview of IEEE standards- 802.3, 802.4, 802.5 and their comparison, FDDI. Data Link Layer - Elementary Data Link Protocols, HDLC, Sliding Window protocol, Error Handling. UNIT3: Network Layer: Design issues of networking layer, routing algorithms, Congestion, congestion control algorithms, Internetworking, Internet Protocol, IP address, IPv6 (overview only) . UNIT4: Transport Layer: Transport Layer Design issues, connection management establishing a connection and releasing a connection, The TCP Protocol- TCP Header, TCP connection management, TCP transmission policy, TCP congestion control & TCP timer management, UDP. UNIT5: Application Layer: Network Security- Cryptography, Secret Key Algorithms, Public key Algorithms, Authentication protocols, Overview of DNS, SNMP, SMTP, EMail, WWW, and FTP. Text Book: 1.
