Line Numbers
Piping lines are numbered in accordance with the Equipment Identification and Tag Numbering Procedure. Generally, line numbers run from one item of equipment to another. The line sequence number changes: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) At equipment connections At all piping material specification changes At Service Code changes At all branches from the main stream

The line sequence number remains unchanged from origin to destination including: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) Example: LINE A At valves, instruments or SP items, unless a change as described above also occurs At line size changes At change of insulation class At main stream of a branch connection

LINE A LINE C LINE B

Control valve bypasses, single manual valve bypasses and PSV bypasses shall carry the same line number as the main stream. Line numbers changing due to a material specification change downstream of a control valve or PSV shall be shown on the piping line list as to/from a line number, not to/from the valve instrument number. Level instrument standpipes shall carry a line number. All equipment with piping attachments (trim) not attributable to a line number, e.g., PIs, TIs, vent and drain valves, pressure, temperature or level instruments directly connected to equipment, shall carry a trim number. The trim number shall be a normal line number for the equipment service, without a line size. The ring main on a firewater system shall have one line number. Sub-mains or bypasses shall be allocated separate line numbers. Branches to hydrants and

monitors shall only be allocated a separate line number if the appliance is not located immediately next to the main. Branches to sprinkler systems, foam protection systems and deluge systems shall have separate numbers. Utility system branches shall carry different line numbers to the mains. Instrument air headers having branches with close-coupled isolating root valves for instrument connections shall not carry separate numbers at the branches. Line numbers shall be placed above the line and shall be shown on all pipelines entering or leaving a P&ID. Line numbers shall be placed on horizontal lines wherever possible. When placed on vertical lines, line numbers shall be to the left of the line.
