Dear Readers,
We have received tremendous
response for our June edition.
People liked the contents, the
format, and the way it was
organized.
This really excites us and ushers us
to do more.
One thing we realized: there are
two types of readers. Type one
people want to contribute their
original works. Type two people
want to contribute something to
show their enthusiasm towards
Theni.
We do not want to see any
disappoint from the type two
contributors, so in June edition we
have given them our endorsement
by accepting interesting Junk
emails, jokes, pictures, cartoons
and short stories. All we would like
to tell them is, please refer to the
source so that we can
acknowledge the same in our
magazine.
However we would like to keep
such external contributions only up
to 20% of our magazine. 80% we
want to keep for original works,
poems, short stories and articles.
I am sure Theni as a forum will
bring out those people who were

never encouraged by leading
magazines and hence will be a
launching platform for future
writers and poets.

We're pretty much concerned with the

few things about what I see a caricature
as:

- chur. Or if you're British: CAR - ick- ah-
chah.
I think caricatures and cartoons are the
same thing. The difference between the
two that I see is this: a caricature is
simply a cartoon of someone or something
that the viewer can recognize as a
specific someone or something.
As soon as someone known by the viewer
is seen in a cartoon, it becomes a
caricature. Here's an example to the
right. This is a cartoon of a basketball. If
you take that basketball and draw a
stovepipe hat on it and give it a beard, it
goes from a cartoon of a basketball to a
caricature of Abraham Lincoln.
It's recognizable as Lincoln even though it
doesn't have a face. But the addition of
"Lincoln-like" props give the basketball a
recognizability as Lincoln.

To confuse the issue, a caricature doesn't
necessarily have to be a cartoon, it could
be a painting, or a sculpture, or even a
photograph.
You could draw what you thought was a
portrait, but if the proportions are
incorrect, but it was still recognizable as
the person you were drawing, then it
could be seen as a caricature.
I think a caricature is a caricature if the
artist intends it to be a caricature
regardless of how it was made.

A DOCTOR’S WISH
Savita was a soft spoken yet dynamic
lady. She has but few friends. Savita has
been refusing marriage due to boundless
love towards her profession. She believed
that a doctor’s profession is the noblest of
all and a family life would only be a
hindrance to her dedication. But due to
pressing demands from her aged Mother,
she finally agreed to get engaged at the
age of 30 and Prem was the victim. Prem
was a Chartered Accountant in a private
firm. He was smart enough for 36 and
chose Savita among the 3 proposals the he
came across. Since Prem lost his parents
at a young age, he had nobody attending
the engagement from his side other than
his brother who reluctantly attended the
function and disappeared. Prem slowly
understood that Savita is not compatible
for a family life. She was so immersed in
doing her job that she scarcely spent time
with Prem. Prem couldn’t plan a week
end with her. She refused to accompany
him for a movie. She cancelled the
surprise party arranged by Prem on her
birthday. Savita was very unique. Prem
wondered why Savita ever got engaged.
Prem spoke to Savita’s parents but to no
avail. She was extremely committed to
her duty and was thoroughly unshaken by
sentiments.
Prem was not prepared to ruin his life. He
decided to put a full stop to this relation.
Savita did not refuse. Prem conveyed the
message to Savita’s parents that he is not
interested in getting married to Savita.
Savita’s Mother passed away on hearing
this news. Savita stayed with her Father
and continued to carry out her duty as
usual. One year passed this way.
One fine morning, Savita was asked to
rush to the hospital to treat a patient run
by a bus. She rushed to the hospital and
gave all the treatment required to save
his life. The patient’s head was
thoroughly damaged. She tried her level
best to save the person. She also called

for a doctor from one of the renowned
hospitals of the town to monitor his
cardiac functioning. Finally, at the end of
the day, she realized that the patient was
none other than Prem. She was shocked
to look at him. Prem who was smart and
handsome looked so weird and scary. This
was the first time she had showed care
and attention to Prem.
This episode haunted her. She was
restless until he recovered completely. It
took 3 months for Prem to recover
completely. Prem too came to know that
Savita treated him with care and
attention. They met quite often – Prem as
a patient and Savita as a doctor.
Prem spent sleepless nights after the
accident. He wanted to meet Savita and
talk to her. He felt that this accident
which took place would have transformed
her mind. He felt love and care in the
treatment that she gave him. He decided
to meet her in her house.
Prem was waiting in front of the door to
be opened. Savita opened the door and
welcomed Prem with a smile. Prem
placed himself comfortably in the sofa
and explained how thankful he is to her
who saved his life. He also expressed his
willingness to get married to her. He
approved of her being committed to her
profession since it is much needed for a
doctor. And finally said that he
understood how much care she showed to
him. But Savita said, “Sorry Prem. You are
mistaken. This is how I treat every
patient. You were also my patient and it
is my duty to treat all my patients. Think
about millions of patients who would
suffer like you. A doctor like me is needed
by them. It is not easy for a woman to
completely shower concentration on her
profession. There need to be one person
like me to at least help my colleagues and
oblige with their request due to their
family commitments. Kindly let me walk
in my way.”

"You cannot serve God and Mammon" (Luke
16:13).
Now Mammon was a "name given to an idol
worshipped as the god of riches." 1 Listeners
understood that Jesus meant a person could
not serve both God and money.
Lovers of Money
The Pharisees found this saying repulsive. The
words translated as "scoffing" or "sneering"
literally meant "to turn one's nose up at" as if
in revulsion. 2 Luke explained their reaction
by writing that the Pharisees were "lovers of
money". (Luke 16:14)
Hearing their reaction, Jesus responded by
first indentifying some of their shortcomings
(Luke 16:15ff). He then presented the parable
of the Rich Man and Lazarus.

Seventeenth sign:
After the Qur'an, the Messenger's greatest
miracle is his character and person, his moral
example. Friend and foe alike agree that he
possessed the highest level of all moral
virtues. 'Ali, a man of the greatest bravery,
repeatedly said: "In the fiercest phases of
fighting we would withdraw into the
stronghold of God's Messenger and take refuge
behind him." Likewise, he possessed all
laudable characteristics to the highest
degree. For this greatest miracle, we refer
readers to Qadi 'Iyad's Shifa' al-Sharif, which
beautifully explains and proves the Prophet's
miraculous moral character.
Another great miracle, also affirmed by friend
and foe, is his supreme Sacred Law (the
Shari'a), the like of which never came before
and will never come again. For a partial
explanation of this supreme miracle, consult
our writings, especially the Words, Letters,
Gleams, and Rays.
One of the Messenger's certain and mutawatir
miracles is splitting the moon by a gesture of
his index finger. This miracle, reported by
some of the foremost Companions (e.g., Ibn
al-Mas'ud, Ibn 'Abbas, Ibn 'Umar, Imam 'Ali,
Anas, and Khudayfa), was proclaimed to the
world by: The Hour is near, and the moon
split (54:1). The stubborn Qurayshi polytheists
did not contradict the news, but claimed that
it was magic. Thus even unbelievers testify to
its occurrence. His Mi'raj (Ascension) is a still
greater miracle shown to the heavens'
inhabitants. Readers can refer to the Treatise
of the Mi'raj, a short part of which appears at
the end of this treatise as an appendix. We
will mention another miracle that the Prophet
worked in connection with the Mi'raj.

When God's Messenger informed the Quraysh
of this event, they refused to believe him,
saying: "If you actually traveled to the Masjid
al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, as you claim, describe
its doors and walls." God's Messenger would
later say: "I was annoyed by their question
and denial in a way that had never happened
to me before. Suddenly, God lifted the veil
between me and Bayt al-Maqdis (Masjid
al-Aqsa) and showed it to me. I looked at it
and described it as it stood before my
eyes."[1] Thus the Quraysh realized that God's
Messenger was giving the correct and
complete description.
In addition, God's Messenger told them:
"During my journey I saw one of your
caravans. It will arrive here tomorrow at such
and such a time." The Quraysh waited for its
arrival at the promised time. It seems the
caravan was about to be delayed by about an
hour. In order for the Prophet's word to be
proved true, Earth did not rotate for one
hour.[2] This is confirmed by meticulous
researchers.
Considering that Earth stopped rotating to
confirm Prophet Muhammad's words, and that
the sun witnessed this by its apparent rest in
the sky, just imagine how vast is the
misfortune of those who do not confirm and
follow such a person, and how vast is the
good fortune of those who respond: "We have
heard and obeyed" and proclaim: "Thanks be
to God for belief and Islam."

Vishnu Puranam
Tale of King Ven and Prithu
Parashar says- " With the help of Dhruv,
his wife gave birth to two sons- Sishti and
Bhavya. Sishti had five sons- Ripu,
Ripunjay, Vipra, Vikal and Vrikteja. Ripu
had a brilliant son Chaakshush.
Chaakshush had a son Manu. Manu had
sons- Puru, Kuru, Shatadyumna, Tapasvi,
Satyavaan, Suchi, Agnishtome, Atiraatra,
Sudyumna and Abhimanyu. Kuru had sons-
Anga, Suman, Khyaati, Kratu, Angira and
Shivi. Anga had a son named Ven. The
sages had churned the right hand of Ven
to produce a son named Vainya. He later
on became renowned as Prithu. He had
even milked the earth for the benefit of
his subjects."
Maitreya says- "Why did the sages churn
Ven’s hand? What was their purpose of
getting Prithu?"
Parashar says- "Mrityu had his first child as
a daughter named Sunitha who was
married to Anga. Sunitha had given birth
to Ven. Ven had all the faults of his
maternal grandfather Mrityu and hence
was devil-like in nature." At the time of
his coronation, Ven had declared- "I am
the God and the Yagyapurush. Hence, in
future, no one shall perform Yagyas and
donate Dakshina." The sages praised him
and said- "O king! We speak about the
benefit of you and your subjects. Through
grand Yagyas, we shall worship
omnipotent Lord Hari. Thus pleased, he
will grant all your desires. O king! In the
kingdom of which kings, Lord Hari is
worshipped as the presiding deity of
Yagyas, He fulfils all their desires."
Ven said- "Who is greater than me and
even venerable, whom you regard as the
presiding deity of the Yagyas? All the

deities like Brahma; Vishnu, Mahesh,
Indra, Vayu etc. are present in the body
of the king. Hence, the king has all the
virtues of these deities. Therefore, do
what I say. Such as a woman’s duty is to
serve her husband, similarly it is your duty
of all of you to obey my dictate."
The sages tried to convince Ven
repeatedly but in vain. At last, when he
did not agree to their proposal, the sages
killed him. Immediately after killing the
king, the sages saw the clouds of dust
rising all around. It was revealed to them
upon enquiry that the subjects of a king-
less kingdom have resorted to plundering
and looting each other and it was because
of that stampede that clouds of dust were
rising.
The sages then churned the thighs of
issue-less king and produced an ugly black
man. He was feeling excited and asked
the sages what he should do? The sages
asked him to Nishid (sit down); hence he
came to be known as Nishaad. His progeny
came to be known as Nishaadgana.
Appearance of Nishaad did away with all
the sins of Ven. The sages then churned
Ven’s right hand and produced prowessive
Prithu whose body was radiating like fire.
As soon as he appeared, bow and arrow
and shield of Lord Shiva descended from
heaven and all the subjects felt extreme
joy. With the birth of such a pious son,
Ven attained a position in the heaven.
For the coronation of Prithu, Brahma
himself had appeared there with the
water from all the rivers and oceans, all
kinds of gems and along with all the
deities. Presence of chakra in right hand
of Prithu pleased Brahma. This chakra of
Lord Vishnu is present in the hands of
extremely dominating kings. Such a king
remains unaffected even by the gods.

Thus occupying the royal throne, King
Prithu was a boon for his subjects. He was
so religious that the seas and mountains
paved way for him. His flag always
remained fresh and new. Even there was
no need to sow the seeds; the earth
herself provided all the cereals. Cows
gave milk spontaneously and every leaf of
all the trees in the kingdom was full of
honey.
Immediately after his appearance, King
Prithu organised a grand Yagya. At the
time of Somabhishek (bathing with grape-
wine) during the Yagya, a man and a
woman appeared from the earth. The
sages advised them to pray King Prithu.
With folded hands they asked that the
king had arrived moments before them.
His reputation had not spread far and
wide. Why should then they pray such a
king? The sage said that they should pray
the king for the great achievements he
would attain in future. King Prithu
thought that it was because of merits that
a man becomes praiseworthy. ‘Hence I
will do exactly the same things that this
couple would recite during the prayers’
thought the king. Thus during the later
course, king Prithu planted those virtues
firmly in his conscience and ruled the
earth. During his rule, he performed many
great Yagyas.
During the anarchy of his father’s regime,
all the vegetation had been destroyed
from all over the earth. There was
nothing for the subjects to satisfy their
hunger with. So, they approached him and
said- "O great king! Due to the anarchy of
your father’s regime, the earth had
annihilated all the cereals within her.
Your subjects have no choice but to
starve. Kindly protect us from this
condition."
Pitiable condition of the subjects
infuriated king Prithu. Taking the divine
weapons of Lord Shiva, he ran after the
earth. In guise of the cow, the earth ran

in all the three worlds but wherever she
went she found Prithu still chasing her.
Thus shivering with fear, she ultimately
appeared before him and said- "O king!
Don’t you see the sin in killing a helpless
woman." Prithu said- "If killing a wretched
person benefits scores of other people,
there is no sin doing so." The earth said-
"You want to kill me in the interest of
your subjects but think what will be the
base of the subject then?" Prithu said-
"You need not worry about that. I will
myself support my subjects." These words
frightened the earth. She greeted the king
and said- "O king! All the tasks started
with a distinct purpose reach their
completion successfully, so I am telling
you a way out of the present condition.
Do then, as you desire. I can give out all
the herbs and cereals that I have
annihilated in the form of milk. So, for
the benefit of the subjects, kindly
produce such a calf for which I can give
milk spontaneously with motherly
feelings. You then provide me with a plain
surface everywhere so that I can produce
milk that is the seed of all the cereals and
herbs."
King Prithu then uprooted many great
mountains with his bow and arrow and
stowed them at a single place. Before
that there was no distinct demarcation of
village, towns, cities etc. because of the
plain surface of the earth and there was
no distinct sequence of cereals, cows,
agriculture and trade. All this systems
started from the time of Prithu. Since
then people began to populate those parts
of the earth that were plain.
For the benefit of his subjects, King Pritu
himself milked all the cereals from earth
making Swayambhu Manu a calf. It is the
cereals that still sustain the entire
population of the world. Since then King
Prithu came to be known as the father of
earth because he had spared her life.

Increasing Life
YOU MUST GET RID OF THE LAST VESTIGE
OF THE OLD IDEA that there is a Deity
whose will it is that you should be poor or
whose purposes may be served by keeping
you in poverty.
The intelligent substance which is all, and
in all, and which lives in all and lives in
you, is a consciously living substance.
Being a consciously living substance, it
must have the nature and inherent desire
of every living intelligence for increase of
life. Every living thing must continually
seek for the enlargement of its life,
because life, in the mere act of living,
must increase itself.
A seed, dropped into the ground, springs
into activity, and in the act of living

produces a hundred more seeds; life, by
living, multiplies itself. It is forever
becoming more. It must do so, if it
continues to be at all.
Intelligence is under this same necessity
for continuous increase. Every thought we
think makes it necessary for us to think
another thought; consciousness is
continually expanding. Every fact we
learn leads us to the learning of another
fact; knowledge is continually increasing.
Every talent we cultivate brings to the
mind the desire to cultivate another
talent; we are subject to the urge of life,
seeking expression, which ever drives us
on to know more, to do more, and to be
more.
In order to know more, do more, and be
more we must have more. We must have
things to use, for we learn, and do, and
become only by using things. We must get
rich so that we can live more.
The desire for riches is simply the
capacity for larger life seeking
fulfillment. Every desire is the effort of
an unexpressed possibility to come into
action. It is power seeking to manifest
which causes desire. That which makes
you want more money is the same as that
which makes the plant grow; it is life
seeking fuller expression.
The one living substance must be subject
to this inherent law of all life. It is
permeated with the desire to live more,
and that is why it is under the necessity of
creating things. The one substance desires
to live more in and through you.
Therefore it wants you to have all the
things you can use.
It is the desire of God that you should get
rich. He wants you to get rich because he
can express himself better through you if
you have plenty of things to use in giving
him expression. He can live more in you if

you have unlimited command of the
means of life.
The universe desires you to have
everything you want to have.
Nature is friendly to your plans.
Everything is naturally for you.
Make up your mind that this is true.
It is essential, however, that your purpose
should harmonize with the purpose that is
in all.
You must want real life, not mere
pleasure of sensual gratification. Life is
the performance of function, and the
individual really lives only when he
performs every function — physical,
mental, and spiritual — of which he is
capable, without excess in any.
You do not want to get rich in order to
live swinishly, for the gratification of
animal desires. That is not life. But the
performance of every physical function is
a part of life, and no one lives completely
who denies the impulses of the body a
normal and healthful expression.
You do not want to get rich solely to
enjoy mental pleasures, to get
knowledge, to gratify ambition, to
outshine others, to be famous. All these
are a legitimate part of life, but the
person who lives for the pleasures of the
intellect alone will only have a partial
life, and he will never be satisfied with
his lot.
You do not want to get rich solely for the
good of others, to lose yourself for the
salvation of mankind, to experience the
joys of philanthropy and sacrifice. The
joys of the soul are only a part of life, and
they are no better or nobler than any
other part.
You want to get rich in order that you
may eat, drink, and be merry when it is
time to do these things; in order that you

may surround yourself with beautiful
things, see distant lands, feed your mind,
and develop your intellect; in order that
you may love others and do kind things,
and be able to play a good part in helping
the world to find truth.
But remember that extreme altruism is no
better and no nobler than extreme
selfishness; both are mistakes.
Get rid of the idea that God wants you to
sacrifice yourself for others and that you
can secure his favor by doing so. God
requires nothing of the kind.
What God wants is that you should make
the most of yourself, for yourself, and for
others. And you can help others more by
making the most of yourself than in any
other way.
You can make the most of yourself only by
getting rich, so it is right and
praiseworthy that you should give your
first and best thought to the work of
acquiring wealth.
Remember, however, that the desire of
substance is for all, and its movements
must be for more life to all. It cannot be
made to work for less life to any, because
it is equally in all, seeking riches and life.
Intelligent substance will make things for
you, but it will not take things away from
some one else and give them to you.
You must get rid of the thought of
competition. You are to create, not to
compete for what is already created.
You do not have to take anything away
from anyone.
You do not have to drive sharp bargains.
You do not have to cheat or to take
advantage. You do not need to let anyone
work for you for less
than he earns.

You do not have to covet the property of
others or to look at it with wishful eyes.
No one has anything of which you cannot
have the like, and that without taking
what he has away from him.
You are to become a creator, not a
competitor. You are going to get what you
want, but in such a way that when you
get it every other person whom you affect
will have more than he has now.
I am aware that there are those who get a
vast amount of money by proceeding in
direct opposition to the statements in the
paragraph above, and may add a word of
explanation here. Individuals of that type
who become very rich do so sometimes
purely by their extraordinary ability on
the plane of competition, and sometimes
they unconsciously relate themselves to
substance in its great purposes and
movements for the general upbuilding

Carnegie, Morgan, et al., have been the
unconscious agents of the supreme in the
necessary work of systematizing and
organizing productive industry, and in the
end their work will contribute immensely
toward increased life for all. But their day
is nearly over. They have organized
production and will soon be succeeded by
the agents of the multitude, who will
organize the machinery of distribution.
They are like the monster reptiles of the
prehistoric eras. They play a necessary
part in the evolutionary process, but the
same power which produced them will
dispose of them. And it is well to bear in
mind that they have never been really
rich; a record of the private lives of most
of this class will show that they have
really been most abject and wretched.
Riches secured on the competitive plane
are never satisfactory and permanent.
They are yours today and another’s
tomorrow. Remember, if you are to
become rich in a scientific and certain
way, you must rise entirely out of

competitive thought. You must never
think for a moment that the supply is
limited. Just as soon as you begin to think
that all the money is being “cornered”
and controlled by others, and that you
must exert yourself to get laws passed to
stop this process, and so on — in that
moment you drop into the competitive
mind and your power to cause creation is
gone for the time being.
And what is worse, you will probably
arrest the creative movements you have
already begun.
KNOW that there are countless millions of
dollars’ worth of gold in the mountains of
the earth, not yet brought to light. And
know that if there were not, more would
be created from thinking substance to
supply your needs.
KNOW that the money you need will
come, even if it is necessary for a
thousand men to be led to the discovery
of new gold mines tomorrow.
Never look at the visible supply. Look
always at the limitless riches in formless
substance, and KNOW that they are
coming to you as fast as you can receive
and use them. Nobody, by cornering the
visible supply, can prevent you from
getting what is yours.
So never allow yourself to think for an
instant that all the best building spots will
be taken before you get ready to build
your house, unless you hurry. Never worry
about the trusts and combines, and get
anxious for fear they will soon come to
own the whole earth. Never get afraid
that you will lose what you want because
some other person “beats you to it.” That
cannot possibly happen. You are not
seeking anything that is possessed by
anybody else; you are causing what you
want to be created from formless
substance, and the supply is without
limits. Stick to the formulated statement:

Vacation bonanza
It was 12 midnight. We were all sleeping
in that small house. I was hardly 5 or 6
years then. We heard a knock on the
door. All got up at that odd hour.
Suddenly I saw a new biscuit packet
shining on the sofa. Mixed memories of
ghost and angel stories confused me.
Puzzled, my father opened the door and
peeped out. No one was there. In another
five minutes, there was a knock again.
This time, the thief was caught red-
handed for he was hiding cozily in the
corner of the verandah. It was none other
than my maternal uncle.
We children jumped in joy. Oh! How
sweet those days were! Actually he had
slipped the biscuits through the window.
And he loved to play different tricks with
us every time.
Invariably every year, I would land in my
grandmother’s house for summer vacation
coupled with a short tour to a few places.
My grandmother was patient incarnate
and never got angry. My uncle who gave
midnight surprises on the other hand was
a strict disciplinarian though kind at
heart.
Many times, I had spent my vacation away
from my parents. Adjusting to both
extremes, I never remembered of

complaining anything to anybody. It was
a time without TV and computers. Still
spending time was not a problem. At the
most, I would not trouble my grandma by
any means. I am sure all my peers would
have only similar experiences.
I wonder how different the children of
today are, especially those being brought
up here! They have a wish-list in their
hands always; want to have computers
and TV wherever they go; either want to
buy CD games or junk food whenever they
enter a shop; refuse to walk long
distances; respect to parents and elders is
a term to be read only on paper; and
sadly the list goes endless.
These children are given royal welcome
when they visit their native places, being
pampered by unwanted and unnecessary
gifts. It is a bonanza time for them
always!
It is sad to note that the youngsters hardly
understand the value of money. They
want everything they see or yearn for.
Discipline has become a distant relative
and manners alien to their standards. Any
kind of advice on the nuances of life
seems boredom.
The odd twist of the story is, children of
yesteryears and parents of today either
have no control on their children to
correct their wrongs if any, or cheer up
their children voluntarily in these lines as
if they take for a catwalk to the next
generation. There are exceptions of
course but this is what I observe for the
past few years.
I agree that the pressure to excel is great
for the present generation. But that
should not erode the richness of culture
and values, of course!
The vacation time is fast approaching as
one could feel the pulsating atmosphere

‘Anbe Shivam’ in which Madhavan is skeptical
about donating blood but seeing the plight of
the dying child, he agrees but unfortunately
the child dies. The actor has brought out the
emotions so beautifully in the film. Do we
stop admiring the actor’s abilities or can we
go that extra mile to give life to somebody
just like that character?

Do we know how many people are in constant
need of blood like patients who are suffering
from thalessemia?

Yes, we all know.
Let me reserve my dreams to start an
orphanage for young children or old-age home
for the future but at the present let me learn
to give a ray of hope and love through this
small gesture for which I am not going to lose
anything.
I am just praying to God for those people
whose blood groups are very rare, say O
negative. In the current scenario, they have
to doubly take care of themselves what with
the limited donors available even for the most
common blood groups. One of the rarest is my
nephew. May God bless all!

Types of Bees
The Queen bee - The Queen is the centre of
the hive: She accompanies every-swarrn that
you see. The Queen is also the largest bee
and her body is specially formed for egg-
laying-so that the eggs can be placed a little
above the centre of the cells in the
honeycomb. Before depositing her eggs, she
inspects each cell to be sure it is properly
cleaned by the workers. Just think of her
effort and industry!
When, for any reason the colony needs a new
Queen; extra royal jelly is fed to chosen
larvae in the cells. The first young Queen to
emerge from the pupa destroys all other
developing Queens in the cells, then sets out
on her mating flight after five to twelve days.
After mating the young Queen has much to
do. With her eggs fertile, she must return
swiftly to the hive. The old Queen will have
left with a swarm beforehand. The new
Queen, closely surrounded by worker bees
who feed and groom her, can lay up to one
egg every minute day and night.
The Drones - Drones are the future fathers of
the bee colony (rather a very small number of
them will be). Shorter than the Queen, drones
are larger than the workers. They have no
accomplishments other than being patient.
They cannot make wax, have no proboscis for
collecting pollen or nectar, and have no
pollen pikes on their legs. They are never
called on to defend the hive so they have no
need for a sting.
Drones rarely feed themselves - instead, they
hold out their tongues and a worker bee
places food on it. They are truly gentlemen in
waiting. They are waiting for the day when a
young Queen will fly from the hive.
When a new Queen flies from the hive she
joins the drones, who are already circling in
drone congregation areas: The swiftest drones
will catch and mate with the Queen, but their
life is short. After mating, they will float back
to earth and be dead by the time they reach
the ground: They have helped to bring new
life to the colony and their work is finished.
The remaining drones return to the hive
either to be driven out or to die there during
the winter or when a shortage of food occurs.

Worker bees - The main section of the hind
pair of legs has special spines for holding
pollen or propolis (a kind of gum). The centre
legs are the bees’ main support, but all six
legs are variously equipped with brushes,
combs an spurs with which to brush pollen
from the eyes, clean the antennae, wipe dust
from the wings and pack pollen spines.
The tongue and mandibles are used to lick
and collect pollen grains from the anthers of
flowers, with the result that the pollen grains
are moistened with honey and stick together.
The pollen is then transferred to the hind legs
and held firmly until the forager enters the
hive, when it is then packed in cells in the
honeycomb, Worker bees have two heavy
spoonshaped jaws which work sideways. The
jaws are used for collecting pollen and
chewing wax. The abdomen has two
important organs - the wax glands and the
sting. Wax glands are special cells on the
under side of the last four segments of the
body. Wax is discharged through these special
cells in tiny scales, which are then moulded
and used in comb building, capping and the
cells.
Life in the hive - In her lifetime, the Queen
can produce more than one million eggs. At
first, after the eggs are hatched, all the
larvae are fed on royal jelly - a milky white
fluid made by a gland in the nurse bees’
head. This rich food helps larvae to grow
strongly. After three days, the workers’ diet
is changed mainly to pollen and nectar, while
the Queens continue to be fed on royal jelly.
On the eighth day, the larva spins itself a
silken cocoon and during the next week or
two makes the great change from pupa to
adult. It gnaws its way out of its cocoon and,
as it gains strength, joins the workers in their
task of foraging or engineering, nursing the
young, converting nectar into honey, cleaning
the hive and waiting on the Queen. So the life
cycle goes on!

Their language is one of vibration. To indicate
distance, the scout bee uses an audible code
of buzzes, on a 200 cycle per second note
with a pulse rate of 35 to the second. The

number of pulses of sound in each buzz
