Creating a superb display

A beautifully installed aquarium can make a huge difference to any interior space. In the home or office, you can create a feature which reflects the surrounding decor or blends with existing colour schemes. Give some prior thought to gravel, rocks, plants and fish as there are many ways to achieve an individual look. Look out for our exciting range of Marina accessories which includes a range of pictorial or moulded rock backgrounds. As well as adding interest and atmosphere to the scene they help to hide any unsightly wires or tubes. Every Fluval designer aquarium provides an ideal environment to support a living ecosystem and setting it up can be an enjoyably creative experience.

Planning
Deciding where your aquarium is going to live is an important decision and deserves some preparation and thought. Once the tank is fully set up with water and decorations it cannot be moved. The only alternative is to completely empty and dismantle it to start again in a new location - definitely NOT a good start to your new aquatic hobby! Choosing the right place also depends on various factors which may have undesirable effects on the aquarium conditions. Radiators, sunny windows, fireplaces and other sources of heat should be avoided. TVs, speakers, hi-fi and any other sources of sound and vibration should be sited away from the aquarium as this will cause distress to the fish.

Location
Study, dining room, living room, kitchen, entrance hall and office - wherever its final position you can be sure that your aquarium will attract interest from visitors and children. Be careful if you are considering using a conservatory - areas with temperature fluctuations are inadvisable. Dont hide it behind other furniture either- it deserves to be seen in pride of place. Use the room planner overleaf to help work out a good position. You may want to change the existing furniture arrangement to accomodate it too.

Weight
Water is extremely heavy - around 1 kilo per litre. Even the smallest Roma aquarium holds 90 litres - around 14 stones! - and thats before adding any gravel or rocks! Always use the specially constructed aquarium cabinet and give some thought to the flooring too - is it strong enough to support the combined weight of a filled aquarium and cabinet?

Power
Items of electrical equipment need access to mains power, so bear this in mind when choosing a site. Make sure you can reach the socket easily. Dont position too close to other electrical appliances where water spills may cause serious damage or safety hazards.

Use tracing paper or cutout the shapes to lay over the graph and indicate the dimensions of the room or area where you plan to put the aquarium. Mark the sizes and positions of principal features including chimney breasts, alcoves, doors, windows, plug sockets and sloping ceilings and any other features which may affect the positioning of the aquarium unit. The graph will help you to plan the location of your aquarium.
