Definition: Use of computers in control and management of manufacturing processes, such as automatically coordinated operations of conveyor systems, cutting

and forming machines, and riveting and welding machines.

Computer Aided Manufacturing is concerned with automating the planning and controlling of production.CAM controls the machine tools on the shop floor .

The machines perform a variety of operations and receive instructions from a computer on the specification of operations.

It was first used in1971 for car body designing and tooling. The computers programs can be stored in the manufacturing data base , retrieved updated and revised as components are added or redesigned and transmitted electronically in house and externally by satellite to other divisions /facilities.

Benefits:

Instructions from a computer are more reliable than those from a skilled operator. Product quality is more consistent from unit to unit. Close tolerances can be obtained. Lower labour costs because of less operator time.

Areas of Usage
In Mechanical Engineering 2. In Machining 3. In electronic design automation
1.

Automation
The Difference b/w automation and Mechanization both are different words in what way is that coming to mechanization just the physical work of person is reduced an example can illustrated clearly i.e the use pressure cooker in the home to make food here before we have to keep cooker on the stove then again we have to take to complete process. But

Automation is just the person is observing like a traffic signals are automatically showing the signal for clearing the traffic. constable just observing.

Here we have to know thing is AIS=Automatic Identification System. EX:Bar codes ,Radio frequencies etc Usage:for storage retailing and wholesale.
