technical work within the department as required by senior technical staff and under the supervision of other qualified staff. Sample reception, preparation, recording and reporting of results in accordance with departmental procedures and protocols. To carry out testing under supervision on a range of bodily fluids and tissues many of which may be highly infectious and extremely unpleasant. To deal with any spillages of noxious and toxic chemicals and bodily fluids according to standard operating procedures. To be able to follow all health and safety guidance as set out in standard operating procedures and departmental policies. To be able to follow all quality control procedures as set out in departmental instructions. To maintain high technical standards and ensure that any areas in which they work are kept clean and tidy. To work accurately and precisely in a conscientious, disciplined and flexible way. To assist with routine and emergency maintenance and calibration of equipment both inside and outside the department as appropriate, and to identify any problems associated with equipment they use to supervisory staff. To attend and participate in departmental meetings, and to comment and contribute to the development of new policies and procedures.

To communicate with patients often with a barrier to communication on a range of topics related to sample collection.

Supporting Information for Trainee Biomedical Scientist Grade

Qualifications There are two routes for an individual to become a state registered biomedical scientist. The role of both types of entry are exactly the same and they carry out the same supervised work. The two routes are: With a Biomedical Science degree. This is then followed by a 1year intensive laboratory based training period during in which a portfolio of work is built up. After between 1 year and 18 months, the individual is assessed by the Health Professions Council and if successful is awarded state registration which will allow them to become a qualified biomedical scientist. With suitable A level qualification. Followed by a 5 year training period during which they undertake a part time biomedical sciences degree. During the final year of the 5 years, they will complete a portfolio of work. On achieving their degree, they will then be assessed by the Health professions Council and if successful will be awarded state registration which allows them to become s qualified biomedical scientist.

Job Role The role of staff at these grades is varied. Staff working at Trainee BMS grade, rotate around all sections of a department receiving training and becoming experienced in all aspects of the work under the supervision of qualified staff. They may work in a variety of different departments and sections within Pathology to gain experience of different techniques. Much of the work involves the processing of tests. During this training period, they learn about the interpretation and technical authorisation of diagnostic test results, but are only allowed to authorise under direct supervision. Working within Pathology brings staff into contact with many distressing and unpleasant areas. They are required to examine and analyse/dissect specimens from every part of the body, including tissues, faeces, blood, sputum and the products of abortion. Working with qualified staff they may be involved in identifying serious disease states. This can involve discussing diagnostic tests and the reasons for carrying them out with seriously ill patients or carers. In many areas of work, the job involves quite long periods of intense concentration often sitting or standing in once place for long periods, for example when looking at blood films, microbiological culture plates, cytology slides, analyser screens. This can be difficult, as there may be constant interruptions due to such things as telephone calls. Much of the work involves the use of computers, and they are expected to have a comprehensive ability, including data and text entry, the use of computers for the manipulation of data and the use of databases. Members of staff regularly spend a good deal of their time working at keyboards. The work necessitates communication on a range of subjects, some of which includes complex technical information. They communicate with a wide range of individuals and groups, including colleagues within Pathology, medical and nursing staff on wards and directly with patients, who are often old and who can have difficulty in understanding some of the complicated information being given. They are expected to undertake laboratory audits, help to carry out evaluations of new equipment and new analytical methods that are under review. They will occasionally take part in research projects that are undertaken within Pathology. Much of the equipment used is very expensive (often in excess of 100,000) and complex. Although they do not have overall responsibility whilst in training they may be involved

troubleshooting and for carrying out minor repair of the equipment. Qualified and senior members of staff normally organise their working patterns to ensure they can achieve state registration. Pathology Directorate Organisational Structure
