HIST 3451 Fall 2010 Name: Jaap Tromp Worksheet VI: The Rise of the NSDAP 1.

What subject did Haffner major in at the university? He studied law in order to become a Referendar. 2. What does Haffner mean when he writes that his nose saved him from Nazism? He means to say that he had a good gut feeling regarding the worth (or worthlessness!) of human, moral and political views and attitudes (103), unlike most Germans. His metaphorical nose told him that Nazism stank, so he stayed away from it. 3. According to Haffner, what effect did the German Communist Party have on most Germans? It was generally expected that the communists would strike back against the Nazis. They seemed very powerful and determined: they raised their fists in salute, and had weapons (120). It took a while before the Germans realised that the Communists were not actually that powerful, but this became apparent after they were prohibited without any fight. 4. Give one reason Haffner provides to explain why the Nazis succeeded in their revolution after 1933. The great number of events that the Nazi organised was enjoyed by the people after some time. People started to join them voluntarily and people [were] permanently occupied and distracted by an unending sequence of celebrations, ceremonies and national festivities (128). 5. Give one way in which the Kammergericht where Haffner worked was nazified. The position of a Jewish judge was taken by an Amtsgerichtsrat who was supposedly high up in the SS. He claimed that the meaning was more important than the letter of the law (189), and then quote Hitler.
