CCU JOURNAL 1 Dear Sandra Lee McKay I read your narrative English as an International Language for one of my classes.

. After reading your story, I feel more interested in the relationship between culture and English development. The reason I have such a feeling is because actually I am interested in everything about culture and want to know more about the position of English in the International field. I have learned three things from your story. First, I learned several new words related to culture, language, and identity. Those words are (1) World Englishes; (2) English as a Lingua Franca; (3) standard language. I choose it because I think those three words represent overall what you talk about in this article. Although they sounds like have same meaning but those words are new for me, and all are interesting. Your narrative teaches me about something behind teaching and learning English. We can not only teaching and learning about the language itself, but also the specific social language because different culture have different attitude toward English. Some people put English in homogeny position, while others in heterogeny position. But what happened nowadays is mix between English and variety of language that highlights the speakers identity. And I think its okay because it means people adapted the language. In addition, reading your story made me think of what EIL curricula should do. From one of the key principles it is said that EIL curricula should include examples of the diversity of English variety used today. I agree with this part because English learners should know the context when or where they use English. Reading your story also raises several questions such as: what kind of technology that should use in development of language learning? Because I was thinking of people who live in remote area and they are not familiar with technology such as internet or even computer. Finally, I absolutely like your narrative. It can increase my knowledge in culture and English development. Best, Pratesa Debulaela (112008135)
