Comp 102-102 31 August 2011 Single Paragraph Essay On Dumpster Diving In Lars Eighners intriguing story On Dumpster Diving, one thing is prevalent throughout the entirety of the story. As long as you have optimism in lifes struggles, you can face anything. Eighner knows that even though the winds of change have brought about what would appear to be bad luck to your average American citizen, he can still survive as long as he looks at it with the correct perspective. Towards the beginning of his story he states Although if I could I would naturally prefer to live the comfortable consumer life, perhaps- and only perhaps-as a slightly less wasteful consumer, owing to what I have learned as a scavenger(254). The character Eighner gained was of much more value to him than a comfortable life. Eighner has an optimistic spirit about his life as a diver, in fact he states, The diver, after all, has the last laugh. He is finding all manner of good things that are his for the taking. Those who disparage his profession are the fools, not he (259). In the final words of Eighner himself, Between us are the rat-race millions who nightly scavenge the cable channels looking for they know not what. I am sorry for them (265).
