Personal Response

Name: Syearry Sylvester At first I find it's hard to understand this story but after reading it and discussed it with my group partner, for me it is crystal clear that that this is an everyday scenario which happened in our society. Yusuf lost his soul in Singapore, the dream place for all youth at that particular time. Although a bright future awaits him in the place which is full of hope and opportunity, he is still searching for fulfillment in his life. Living in the big city, it would be a series of meaningless journeys through boredom. Obviously, there are some empty spaces in him. Perhaps, those spaces can only be fulfilled by the fresh air in the land where he had been born and brought up. Things were hard back there, but for him, there lays the beauty, freshness and dynamism. It takes no ordinary person who can think the way he thinks, who can value the art of life the way he is. I strongly believe that the situation Yusuf experienced in this story is shared by many of us in this world. He went to Singapore for the sake of to fulfill his father's ambition, to enlighten him but at the end, he came back to where he belongs. His decision to come back to his village disappoints his father who had dreamt a bright day they would live. In human life, yes there are sometimes where we become selfish, we broke down our parents hopes just to fulfill our dreams, it just same like what Yusuf had done to his father. Frankly speaking, I am proud of Yusuf's decision as he aware of his people, his race, where his blood started to flow. He is not a selfish man actually. He wants to be near to his people who in some other ways help him to know the world. He realized that it was not that easy for his parents to bring him up. He wants to live a happy life, do the things he wants to do. If he stays at his village, it doesnt mean that all his knowledge learnt in Singapore is a waste after all. Knowledge can be used for your whole life time. This thing does happen in our lives around us. We can see that, many teenagers from village went to town to find better jobs and live a better life. However, when they return to their own hometown, theyve being treated as strangers by the villagers at their own hometown. Maybe this is why Yusof acting like that. Over all, I agree for what Yusof had done.
