Modeling of converters

Under the guidance of Prof. Dr.A.G.Kothari By G. Lakshmikanth

Introduction: The stability analysis of converter control particularly for multilevel HVDC system is complex and requires systematic approach. here we are discussing a new discrete model which is required for analysis and development of state space model of a ac/dc system.

Problem: Control if converter is a continuous phenomenon, however the discrete nature control due to the discrete instants of time at which firing pulses are generated which effect the convertor output.

Types of converters: 1)AC-AC converter(cyclo converter) 2)AC-DC converter(rectifier) 3)DC-DC converter(choppers) 4)DC-AC converter (inverters)

Applications:

Previously authors modeled rectifiers as a pure simpler, closed form and infinite series for critical gin of closed loop system at half the firing frequency. Other authors aso modeled rectifiers as a sampler followed by a zero order hold element or even more respectively by transportation lag of half the firing period. Busemann who studied the hunting of rectifiers operating at constant current control at half the firing frequency.

Here, we are accurately the sampling naure of rectifier and takes into account for the first time the effect of commutating reactance. In heavy industrial applications D.C motor drives, as well as H.V.D.C transmission considerable commutating reactance Is designed in to the system so, short circuit currents are eliminated.

Here for the stability study of a controlled rectifiers using a new discrete model(impulse model). For this we are using discrete transform(Ztransform) and root locus techniques are used to determine stability boundaries and closed loop expressions are derived for critical gain.
