In recent years, aggressive fish stocking programs on the lake, as well as continued stump cutting, boat lane creation, and marking have added tremendously to Toledo Bends growing popularity as a fishing mecca. While bass and crappie fishing are most popular on Toledo Bend, bream, white bass, striper bass, catfish, and other species are also enjoyed. Highlighting the fishing catches on Toledo Bend are the Florida strain of Largemouth Bass that are being caught in record numbers and record weights, and generating nationwide excitement over the great fishing on The Bend.

Toledo Bend Lake Associations Lunker Program was initiated to support large fish caught and released back in the reservoir for spawn. The program has recently had as many as 50 lunkers (over 10 lbs.) caught in a single year on The Bend. Toledo Bend Lake attracts numerous fishing tournaments because of the abundant fishing and well designed facilities. Cypress Bend Park and San Miguel Park host over 35 major fishing tournaments each year. With a large expanse of water and a few hundred large and small coves alike, Toledo Bend has so many great fishing spots that there is plenty of fishing and plenty of fish for the masses of devoted anglers who live here and who visit here. In Many, the Sabine Theater (a fully restored oldie but goodie movie house from the 1940s) plays host to the Sabine Parish Players anyone-can-join group of local thespians ranging in age from young and old. The Sabine Parish Players bring great community theater to this area, putting on at least four plays a year, many Shakespearean. The theater is also home to the Ark La Tex Music Show, an area wide talent event that is hosted several times a year. In addition, the theater plays host to rallies, rock concerts, pageants, religious functions, political events, and more. In addition to the theater group, clubs and organizations in Toledo Bend Lake Country are both plentiful and varied for all sorts of different interests. Clubs and organizations are close knit but also traditionally very welcoming of new faces and ideas. In this area, there is a Ladies Golf Association and Mens Golf Association at Cypress Bend. There are local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Disabled American Veterans, Shriners Club, Masons, and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Professionally, there are two Lions Clubs and a Rotary Club. There are various book clubs and literary clubs. The SCOA (Sabine Council on Aging) is a local agency which offers a variety of activities for retirees, including quilting groups and quilting activities, along with scrapbooking groups and activities among others. Local fairs and festivals celebrate various arts and crafts, such as the annual Freestate Festival in Florien which always features a display of locally-made quilts. Hodges Gardens State Park offers spring and fall arts & crafts with the Louisiana Crafters Guild. Forty miles to the east, in Natchitoches Parish, the annual Melrose Arts & Crafts Festival, held each year in June, is one of the areas premier arts and crafts festivals and features arts and crafts of all kinds. The Depot Art Guild is in the midst of a resurgence. Having been dormant for a little more than a decade, the group is currently being revived by local artists of all kinds. It is a grass roots effort with both support and assistance by the Town of Many and the Sabine Parish Tourist Commission. Artists represented in the group include a variety of painters, sculptors, photographers, and graphics designers. The guilds most current project is the designing and painting of 10 ft. fish to emphasize the lakes large fish and the art and culture of the region.

The picturesque sawmill Village of Fisher still reflects the nostalgic past of an era gone by and gives visitors the feeling of stepping back in time. Built in 1889 by Louisiana Longleaf Lumber Company, the Company owned the entire Village. The Company buildings that survive today are some of the finest examples to be found of the lumber industries own handiwork. The town was sold to Boise Cascade, and Boise in turn sold the homes to the residents and the general public. Each year at the holiday season, the Village of Fisher lights up its historic buildings in style, and it is a sight to see. Lighted from Thanksgiving through New Year's are the old Commissary building (shown at right), the City Hall building, the old Fisher Baptist Church, the Opera House, the Post Office, and an old Kansas City Southern caboose. The Village is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located 6 miles south of Many, Louisiana on Hwy 171.

Sabine Medical Center is also among many Louisiana rural hospitals in which the state is currently implementing telemedicine systems which will enable patients and doctors to confer long distance from SMC to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. Also, Sabine Medical Center offers two health clinics in Zwolle and Many. Each is staffed with family medical physicians and nurse practitioners. Filled with all sorts of neat history and dynamic cultures, the area that would later become Toledo Bend Lake Country was once known as No Mans Land. The entirety of this area was a territory without any rule whatsoever back in the late 1700s and 1800s, when the Spanish, French, and later the United States were engulfed in continual boundary disputes over this area. The neutral territory, or Neutral Strip as it came to be known, by the very nature of its lack of rule was for years a wild story-a-day kind of place. Still to this day, hunters of a different kind can be found in the southern parts of Toledo Bend Lake Country seeking buried treasure long rumored to have been left by bandits who once roamed this land of lawlessness. Toledo Bend Lake Country is home to a National Historic Trail, The El Camino Real de los Tejas. Highway 6 traverses from Natchitoches to Toledo Bend Lake and makes up a portion of the Trail, perhaps the oldest road system in the United States. The El Camino Real, aka The Kings Highway or the San Antonio Trace, extends from the Rio Grande in Texas to Natchitoches, Louisiana. First developed along a series of trails made by traveling buffalo herds and by Native Americans, and later used as a trade route between the Spanish, the French, and the Native Americans, the El Camino Real is graced by plenty of places of historic significance including Los Adeas, the original capital of Texas, and Fort Jesup, a military base whose men once ruled on-site by president Andrew Jackson. In addition to its colorful history, Toledo Bend Lake Country is an area rich in culture. Many descendants of the original Native Americans and Spanish settlers call this area home, particularly in northern Sabine Parish. The approximately 2,500-member Choctaw Apache Tribe of Ebarb celebrates an annual Pow Wow for the public while the annual Zwolle Tamale Fiesta celebrates both the areas Spanish and Native American heritage.

Even Sabine Parishs suburban areas are nicely contoured with trees and foliage. And not just pines, either. Plenty of oaks, bald cypresses, dogwoods, beech, maple, crepe myrtles, and pecan trees are found throughout the parish. Created solely to celebrate this areas forest land and to ensure the preservation of natures finest is Hodges Gardens, a 700-acre horticulturally-devoted State Park situated in the southeastern portion of Sabine Parish. Hodges Gardens was originally opened in the 1950s by timberman A.J. Hodges as a private reforestation effort and was recently added to the Louisiana State Park system, ensuring protection and continued growth and improvements of this valuable resource. At Hodges Gardens, nature-oriented visitors will experience a wide range of topography, from cultivated gardens featuring both native and imported foliage to rock formations that were exposed during logging and mining operations in the early 20th century. The multilevel floral spectacular that is Hodges Gardens State Park surrounds a 225-acre man-made (and whale-shaped!) lake and is graced by fountains and waterfalls and various gardens including a modern rose garden, an old-fashioned rose garden, and a neat herb garden.
