Relevant experience/qualifications: I think that the supervisors position requires three key qualities: leadership, fiscal responsibility, and experience. As a Non-commissioned and commissioned officer in the armed forces I have been obligated to exercise leadership for most of my adult life. Leadership is more than using the authority that goes with rank; essentially, true leadership is the ability to get the job done right by a group, who didnt necessarily want any part of the job to begin with, and then making them feel good about their accomplishments when the job is over. My rise through the ranks from private to lieutenant colonel attests to my success as a leader. My business background is varied. Although I have a degree in accounting from Memphis State University, Ive never used it as an accountant. However, the fiscal discipline required by an accountant has been a steadfast principle that Ive used throughout my career; I hate to be wasteful. In one of my assignments during my military years I was responsible for research, development and the purchase of small arms weapons for the Marine Corps (this encompassed nearly fifty acquisition programs with an annual budget of about $40 million). Not once during the three years of this assignment did I overspend nor lose any money because of an inability to obligate the funding properly. I attribute this enviable record to my keen sense of fiscal responsibility. I have continued to use this conservative, disciplined approach as a guideline for my decision making during the years I served as the Director of Public Works for the City of Tupelo and throughout the time I have served you on the Lee County Board of Supervisors. Reason for running: Public service is a calling, and it takes a people person to dedicate themselves to serving others. I have been a public servant in one capacity or the other all of my adult life. I know how to work with people. I know how to get a job done. We have some special challenges ahead of us in the very near future. With my experience and proven leadership we are ready to meet these challenges head on. I am the right choice for you.
