Powers and Exponents

Whenever the same number is being multiplied, it can be expressed as a POWER. Here is an example of a power:

Every power has two parts a BASE and an EXPONENT. The BASE is the big number. It tells you what you are multiplying. In our example above, we are multiplying 2s. The EXPONENT is the smaller number, placed slightly above the base number. It tells you how many are being multiplied. In our example above, we multiplying 4 2s. If we wrote it out as a regular multiplication problem, it would look like this: 2x2x2x2 We call this EXPANDED FORM. 2x2x2x2 = 16 The answer is called STANDARD FORM. So, the standard form of 24 = 16.
