Economy and Industry Profile


Textiles, diamond business, sugar industry, agro & food processing, paper, engineering and chemicals are some of the key business sectors in Navsari The district has well developed floriculture and horticulture activities owing to its suitable climate and presence of a major player Best Roses Biotech Pvt. Ltd. Best Roses has pioneered 6 hectare greenhouse project in the district which is the largest exportoriented floriculture project in the State. The Company exports to countries such as, Japan, Germany and UK, etc. Other large players such as Gufic Biosciences Ltd., Tata Steel Ltd., and Mafatlal Industries are present in the district Navsari district is the largest producer of chikoo in the State and the largest exporter of the fruit in India The district has huge sugarcane fields as a result of which sugar manufacturing industry is a major business in Maroli and Gandevi talukas of the district

In the year 2006-07, Navsari produced more than 2 lakh Metric Tonnes (MT) of fruits, around 1.20 lakh MT of vegetables and approximately 4,187 MT of spices Navsari is the largest producer of Chikoo

There are approximately 7,525 small scale industries present in Navsari. During 1988-97, textiles sector attracted the highest investment of INR 132 crore (USD 31 million) contributing 44% to total investments during the decade

Economy Drivers
The development of Vansi-Borsi port as direct berthing deep water port proposed by Gujarat Maritime Board will fuel the industrial growth in the district. It will improve business opportunities for industries such as mineral based industries, food and agro processing industries, salt industries and marine based industries The climate of Navsari district is well suited for floriculture activities. The Gujarat Government has covered floriculture activities under Jyotigram Yojana as a result of which 24- hour power supply is available. There are many floriculture projects coming up in the district which will boost the economy of the district and increase the exports of flowers which has a growing demand Surat-Navsari is proposed to be developed as an industrial area along the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). This will augment development of textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food processing industries which are prominent sectors

Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)


Government of India plans to develop a Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) linking Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. The proposed DFC passes through six states in India, of which Gujarat accounts for 38% (564 km) of total DFC length (1483 km). The influenced area of 150 km on either sides of DFC is being developed as Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). Almost 62% of total area of Gujarat (18 out of 26 districts) would be benefited by DMIC development. The State Government identified 82 links in the DMIC influenced area to upgrade them into two/four lane carriageway offering connectivity between ports, industrial estates, hinterlands, markets and points of agricultural produce.

Power and Water

Navsari has a well developed network of Sub stations in the district to cater the need of electricity for industry and residential use

There are nine sub stations of 66 KV each and 2 sub stations of 220 KV present at different locations in the district such as Navsari, Gandevi, Chikhli, and Vasanda

Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from four main sources, viz Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), irrigation canals, check dams, and bore wells

Gas Supply
Gas

Gujarat is the source of more that 39% onshore natural gas production A State-wide integrated gas grid system is being set up in Gujarat with the primary objective of building a continuous state-wide gas supply system for industrial, commercial, vehicular, and household use The existing gas line section present in the district is covering Mora Vapi, and is having total length of 47.312 kms

Proposed Infrastructure Projects


Port sector Gujarat Maritime Board has identified Vansi-Borsi as a green field site for development of a direct berthing deep water port. The location is identified for handling petroleum and liquid chemical cargo for the immediate hinterland The proposed site is 13 km away from nearest broad gauge railway link at Navsari and is 30 km south of the industrial town of Surat The Government has also proposed development of a modern fishing harbour at Dholai port at an estimated cost of INR 14.77 crore (USD 3.5 million) Health sector Navsari Cancer Care Foundation has undertaken a mega project of establishing state-of-art Radiotherapy Unit at Civil Hospital Navsari, jointly with the Government of Gujarat under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model This kind of facility will be first of its kind in South Gujarat and between Baroda and Mumbai

Navsari Agriculture University in the district provides education in the fields of agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and fisheries Sugarcane Research Station at Navsari Agriculture University is mainly engaged in the research of crop improvement, crop production, and crop protection Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technical Education and Research in the district offers courses in computer science, electrical, electronics, communication and mechanical engineering The M.G.G. Hospital offers courses in the district in general nursing and Midwifery Industrial Training Institutes in the Navsari provide training in areas like cutting and sewing, welding, fitting, dress making, chemical plant operating, computer operating, stenography, armature and motor rewinding etc

There are 36 primary healthcare centers, 10 community healthcare centers and 281 sub centers in the district The district has Navsari Cancer Care Foundation, a charitable trust which provides services to cancer patients Navsari has 1 Government General Hospital which provide basic health facilities and houses a mental hospital and a T.B. hospital A government aided M.G.G. Dandi It is a historical place located 16 km from the district. The place has the Saifee Villa Museum established in 1961 to commemorate the Salt March. The museum houses pictures and artifacts from Gandhijis life Somnath Mahadev temple It is situated in Billimora taluka of the district. It is a temple of Lord Mahadev and is the tallest (108 feet) Mahadev temple in south Gujarat Dastur Meherji-Rana Library The library has a picture collection of the old town of Navsari and one of the oldest religious manuscripts of the Parsi community Ubhrat Located about 20 km from Navsari, Ubhrat is a picnic spot with a white sandy beach and an amusement park

Tourism
Vansda National Park The park lies close to the National Highway no. 8 and is bisected by Waghai-Vansda state highway. The park is dense and has variety of flora and fauna. There are over 250 species of plants including many varieties of Orchids. The forest is a habitat for various animals, wide variety of species of birds, butterflies, spiders, and snakes
