Surendranagar is a base for industrial sectors such as, textiles, chemicals, ceramics and food processing industries Textiles and chemicals have been the major sectors of investment and employment in the district, for over two decades The district is the largest producer of Shankar Cotton in the world and also houses the first Cotton Trading Exchange of India Surendranagar has rich reserves of silica sand, fire clay, white clay and moulding sand There are 8 639 SSI units registered in the district and involved in different sectors such as chemicals 8,639 sectors, chemicals, textiles, ceramics, food products, repairing & servicing, etc. Several known industrial groups are present in Surendranagar which include, PepsiCo India Holding Ltd., PET Plastics, Unifrax, Luxite Industries, Mepro Pharmaceuticals, Rimtex Group, Biodeal Laboratories, and Panama Group

Agriculture
Total production of cereals in Surendranagar in 200506 was 1,56,500 Metric Tonnes (MT) Major horticulture crops being produced in the district are papaya, ber, mango and chiku In 2006-07, Surendranagar registered the second highest production of ber (Indian Jujube) in the State The district was the third highest producer of Cotton in the State with a production of 9 83 300 MT in 2005 9,83,300 200506

Small Scale Industries (SSI)


8,639 8 639 small scale industries (SSIs) are present in Surendranagar with an investment of INR 18,482 lakh (USD 45.07 million), generating employment for 49,099 people Maximum number of SSIs are present in sectors such as, ceramics, textile products & machinery, food processing, chemicals and machine tools Wadhwan taluka has witnessed maximum number of SSI units with a healthy investment of over INR 7 419 lakhs (USD 7,419 18.09 million), providing jobs to 19,618 people

Investment Trends 1988 - 1997


According to Industrial Entrepreneurial Memoranda (IEM) filed from 1988 to 2007 Surendranagar 2007, witnessed an investment of over INR 1,950 Crore (USD 475.60 million), providing employment opportunities to over 28,270 persons During 1988 to 1997 major investments in the sectors such as chemicals, dye stuffs and in food processing industries amounted to INR 1,370 Crore (USD 334 million)

Investment Trends 1998 - 2007


During 1998-07, there has been a sudden surge in investments in medical & surgical sector. The sector 1998 07, has shown an investment of INR 76 crore (USD 18.56 million) g g g , g p Emergence of industries engaged in medical, common households and drugs & pharmaceuticals have made a significant contribution to the economy of the district, over the last decade (1988 1997)

Gas Supply
Gas

There are three pipeline sections in the district. The Anand Rajkot section is the longest segment 107 km The existing gas grid in the district is 156 km long and the proposed length of the gas grid is 113 km km.. The proposed gas grid will cover two sections, which includes, Jafrabad (Pipavav line) and Gana - Rajkot line

Water Supply
Water

Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), Irrigation Canals and Sardar Sarovar Project. Sardar Sarovar Project The project envisages supply of water for drinking purposes, irrigation, and industrial use Sardar Sarovar Project water for industrial use is made available through branch canals Two branch canals that supply water to Surendranagar district are listed in Table 4

Education
There are 943 primary, 153 secondary and higher secondary schools in the district With over 2,000 seats, there are 8 ITIs offering several industrial training , , g g programmes which include, fitting, hair & skin care, and machine grinding, computers etc. One Government Polytechnic College in the district offers courses in civil, electrical, mechanical, computer engineering, cosmetic design & dress making, with an intake capacity of 420 students every year C.U. Shah College of Engineering & Technology offers engineering courses in mechanical, information technology and electronic & telecommunication branches with 320 seats per annum There is one medical and pharmacy college each present in the district
