Effective utilization of Fuzzy logic systems with help of Artificial Neural Networks

Abstract: Fuzzy logic systems dont possess any inherent method of learning. It is the experts knowledge that makes the fuzzy system work to satisfaction. In more complex domains even an expert may not be able to provide error free data or knowledge. This is where a Neuro fuzzy system could be used to learn to tune the system and reject unnecessary or redundant fuzzy rules. The basic idea of combining fuzzy systems and neural networks is to design an architecture that uses a fuzzy system to represent knowledge in an interpretable manner and the learning ability of a neural network to optimize its parameters. A combination can constitute an interpretable model that is capable of learning and can use problem-specific prior knowledge. Therefore, neuro-fuzzy methods are especially suited for applications, where user interaction in model design or interpretation is desired. The drawbacks of both of the individual approaches - the black box behavior of neural networks, and the problems of finding suitable membership values for fuzzy systems - could thus be avoided. Just as multi-layer neural network, a neuro fuzzy system also has layers that embed fuzzy system. So in this paper we will discuss how this neuro fuzzy system filters unnecessary data or redundant rules that may have been included by the expert unknowingly.
