Characterization of Heavy Oil for Improved Recovery and Simulation of the Heavy Oil Recovery Factor using the

Reservoir Simulation

Nature The API gravity of less than 20 is termed as heavy oil. It has density closer density of water. This is also called unconventional oil. Large amount of sulphur and other metals is present because of which it is difficult to pump and to bring on to the surface and also to transport through pipeline. It is non Newtonian fluid.

Why extraction of heavy oil is important? Consumption of oil and gas is increasing day by day and the Newtonian reserves are depleting day by day. Soon the conventional oil reserves will come to extinction.

Extraction Due to its nature conventional methods cannot be used hence enhanced oil recovery techniques (EOR) are used to extract it. The viscosity is reduced and flow is improved. The PVT properties can change with change in physical and chemical composition of the reservoir.

Project Scope The project deals with one of the most important PVT property density. It will be noted how the density of heavy oil will change with change in other PVT properties like temperature and pressure using density cell. The results will also be calibrated against Micro-PVT. These results will then be used to model the predicted density of heavy oil. Also the results will be used in a simulator to plot a 2D Model to evaluate how the recovery of Heavy Oil is improved in real life when a predicted density model is used.
