No Child Left Behind and Me: My Perspective 2 No Child Left Behind and Me: My Perspective On January 8th, 2002 President George W. Bush signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 as part of the reauthorization for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that first started in 1965. The purpose of the No Child Left Behind ACT (NCLB) was to ensure proficiency levels of all students at defined levels despite race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, language, disability, or sex (Dept. of Education, 2001). By setting forth mandates to achieving proficiency, NCLB, also, contains many directives new teachers should become accustomed to abiding by, being a Highly Qualified Teachers (HQT), knowing your Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and whether your School (is) in Need of Improvement (SINOI). By setting some ambitious goal, the United States educational system was changed from one that focused primarily on the delivery of education for the last 60 years to one that now was concerned with the results, the start of No Child Left Behind.
