Survey Results generated from Occupy Philly Message Working Group

From October 18-25th, the Message Working Group issued an Action Survey. This survey asked participants to rank issues on a local, national, and international level of importance. These issues came from responses to the initial Issue Survey. The Issue data was released on October 14th in the form of word clouds, which grouped the most-identified issues based on their repetition in different responses. The Action Survey quantified this data on an occupation-wide scale and identified the issues of greatest concern to Occupy Philadelphia and its supporters. 543 respondents completed the Action Survey. It was issued both online (in digital format, promoted via Facebook and Twitter) and as paper copies at the Occupy Philadelphia camp. camp. Approximately 170 responses came via paper surveys and 373 via online response.

LOCAL CONCERNS Education (37%) was rated the greatest local concern, but not with a clear majority. Jobs (35%) and Corruption (27%) were close priorities.

STATE CONCERNS Democracy (34%), Jobs (33%) and Fracking (32%) were fairly evenly tied for top State issues. Environment and Education (which many wrote in as Other) were also top priorities.

NATIONAL CONCERNS This was the only area in which there was a clear majority agreement around Corporate Accountability (62%) as a priority. Jobs and Corporate tax reform were second highest priorities (19%).

INTERNATIONAL CONCERNS Environment (36%), Human Rights (33%) and War (30%) were top international concerns.

There was also an open-ended question that asked participants to suggest an action they would like to see Occupy Philly take. Responses ranged from taking action on the local city council level, to organizing around local housing and land issues, working toward campaign finance reform, advocating for specific policies, and strengthening internal working structures of the OP movement.
