Integrity vs. Despair Wisdom



Erikson believed that much oI liIe is preparing Ior the middle adulthood stage and the last stage
involves much reIlection. As older adults, some can look back with a Ieeling oI integrity that
is, contentment and IulIillment, having led a meaningIul liIe and valuable contribution to
society. Others may have a sense oI despair during this stage, reIlecting upon their experiences
and Iailures. They may Iear death as they struggle to Iind a purpose to their lives, wondering
'What was the point oI liIe? Was it worth it?
For the patient, he did not obtain the Ieeling oI Integrity and so he lose hope Irom being
cured, as he verbalized, 'awan samet en``. Apparent to his statement, there`s a Iear oI death due
to the severe pain suIIered by him.
Ages 40-60)
Assisting teenage children to become responsible and happy adults. * Achieving adult social
and civic responsibility. * Reaching and maintaining satisIactory perIormance in one`s
occupational career. * Developing adult leisure time activities. * Relating oneselI to one`s
spouse as a person. * To accept and adjust to the physiological changes oI middle age. *
Adjusting to aging parents.
As a Good husband to his wiIe, good Iather to his children and a good grandIather, he
always advises and convinces his children not to do the same thing as he did beIore. Instead,
they should spend their time doing things worth doing Ior which beneIits them Ior and
instances like devoting their time studying aside Irom recreational and spiritual activities
they have to attend to. For in the end, regret obviously will exist and thus this is what the
patient wanted to prevent Ior his loved ones not to suIIer the way he suIIered presently.
