Project Description: Cloud computing is emerging as a legitimate alternative model for the sourcing a nd provision of digitized platforms for business organizations. Platform as a Ser vice (PaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) and other XaaS offerings promise reduced IT costs and complexity, combined with improved access and flexibility. This attra ctive combination has allowed many business units to deploy IT functionality ind ependent of the involvement of the IT unit, a phenomenon that seems inconsistent with the intentional development of a coherent Enterprise IT Architecture (EITA ). Alternatively, cloud computing may offer some firms the potential for EITA lea pfrogging, by enabling them to rapidly move to a mature, integrated, modular, ser vice-based IT architecture. The goal of this research project is to examine the adoption and integration of cloud computing into digitized platforms, and identi fy the key business opportunities and management implications for achieving supe rior business value. Research questions include: What are the business value benefits of cloud computing that have been realized? How can cloud computing be best woven into the broader Enterprise IT Architectur e? What is the role of the IT unit in enabling realization of the business value of cloud while protecting the integrity of the digitized platform? What are the critical governance decisions to maximize value while managing the risks of cloud adoption? Constraint-Based Cloud Management (Dr I. Miguel, Prof. A. Dearle & Dr G. Kirby) Can Clouds really meet highly dynamic variations in demand effectively and effic iently? (Colin Allison and Alan Miller)
