Assignment 8 Spur gears Submit on 8-11-11

1. If the involutes that form the outline of a gear are extended, they will intersect and the tooth becomes pointed. Determine the radius at which this occurs for a tooth which has thickness of 6.65 mm at a radius of 98 mm and a pressure angle of 20o. Use a table of involute function for getting the involute pressure angle. Do a linear interpolation for obtaining intermediate values of angle. 2. A pinion with a pitch circle radius of 42 mm drives a rack. The pressure angle is 20o.Calculate the maximum addendum possible for the rack without having involute interference on the pinion. Give a suitable sketch which can be used for the solution. 3. A 3-module 20o pinion of 18 teeth drives a 45-tooth gear. Calculate the pitch radii, base radii, addendum, dedendum, tooth thickness on the pitch circle, and contact ratio. 4. A 2.5- module, 20o pinion with 36 teeth drives a gear with 60 teeth. If the centre distance is increased by 0.65 mm, calculate (a) the radii of the operating pitch circles, (b) the operating pressure angles and (c) the backlash produced.
Exercise 8

1. Draw the profile of an involute teeth for a gear having 24 teeth and module equal to 8.33 mm and a pressure angle of 20o (ref. N D Bhatt- Machine Drawing, problem 16.2, also see Table 16.1 for tooth proportions). Construct at least 3 teeth using tracing sheet. 2. A 2.5- module, 20o pinion with 40 teeth meshes with a rack with no backlash. If the rack is pulled out 1.27 mm, calculate the backlash produced. Illustrate the solution by a suitable sketch. 3. When two equal gears mesh without interference, show that the minimum number of teeth N of these gear must satisfy the relation 3 N 2 sin 2

4. Two gears have a pressure angle of 20 , module m =3 mm. The number of teeth are N1=32 and N2=24. If the gear 2 rotates at 300 rpm, determine the velocity of sliding when the contact is at the tip of gear 2. Take addedum=1 m. Also obtain the maximum velocity of sliding. 5. (Study this mechanism) Ratchet mechanism. This mechanism is used to produce intermittent motion from an oscillating or reciprocating member. An oscillating input to arm 2 gives an intermittent unidirectional rotation to wheel 4 by means of a driving pawl 3. A second pawl 5 (locking pawl) prevents the wheel from turning backwards when 2 is rotated clockwise for another stroke. What is the condition for pawl 3 to remain in contact always? Hint: See the line of action PN in fig. What is the similar condition for pawl 5 to be in contact with wheel? How does the ratchet mechanism in a bicycle function?
